The marketing team had decided that it is not profitable to carry/sell fish at my walmart. In response to this, they have eliminated all tanks in the pet department. We had stopped ordering and recieving fish two weeks prior to eliminating the tanks. There were still many fish left however. About 3 days before everything went away, all fish were marked down to 75% off. There were some guppys and red eye tetras, and lots of glolight tetras and some pictus catfish and 2 oscars as well as a couple of other varieties left. Someone had bought all of the goldfish fortunately. On the day, that they uninstalled the tank wall system, they placed all of the fish in small hang over containers in front and continued to sell them for 75% off as they all slowly suffocated to death. I don't know if you can picture 15 glolights in a small container gasping for air at the top but its not a pretty sight. Quite a large amount of fish died that day, and they were not going to be given away. Wal-mart will destroy or kill anything unless they can sell it.

I was wondering why, when I went in the other day, all the tanks were gone. That's awful, how they did it. The walmart near me didn't have any kind of sale or anything. They were there one day, the next they were gone! Instead of letting them die, why not just give them away? I know the guy at our walmart was really into the fish. Maybe he took some himself to save some. Hope so.

That's absoultely horrendous! You should write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.

man that sucks. You should have bought the fish and given them to your LFS. You might have gotten store credit :)

Yeah. I wanted to save some of the glowlight tetras and buy a 5 gallon tank for them but I was working at the time and wasn't able to. :-(

I'm pretty sure the supercenters still have fish. I don't know if all the walmarts discontinued it. I think its selective like when wal-mart discontinued selling rifles in a lot of urban wal-marts but kept them in the rural areas.

Yea, i know my WalMart still had fish as of a few days ago. I would like to see them go though. They arent in the right conditions and arent properly cared for

Around here, the fish are luckier. Our Wal-Mart and Meijer have clean, well cared for fish depts. They even have display tanks (not for sale) with Oscars and Discus! The same people care for the fish all the time, so I'm guessing they hire a hobbyist to attend the dept.

The Walmarts here are 50%. Out of 4 different Walmarts (they are all Super Walmarts) that I've gone to, 2 of them have done away with their tanks. One however, one store had a large decorative tank with large fish in it. It was a display tank and nothing in it was for sale. I still don't think this is proper though, because people see this and think they can maintain such a tank in their home with Walmart products. What happens then?...innocent fish die.

Weird thing though....the Walmart nearest my house has done away with their tanks. However, the last two times I've been there, I've heard people say, "where are the fish?" Apparently a lot of families and kids were stopping by just to look at the tanks and did notice when they were gone. I don't have a feeling either way about people inquiring, I just thought it was odd that each time I was in the pet supply dept, I heard the same comment.

Cant complain about that. It sounds pretty nice
