sure my one Platy is pregnant. She looks like she is going to POP! My Mollie female sometimes goes up to her and jabs her on the side, and she kinda wobbles with her big belly lol. I hope at least one of the fry survive, but I don't have anything to separate the fry from the rest, so if it does, it'll be survival of the fittest! Just thought I'd share, and I'll let you know if I see any fry:41:

Let me share with you my livebearer experience about a month ago(keep in mind I knew NOTHING about breeding/fry at that time)

10:00pm - notice a tiny thing at the bottom of the tank when I go to turn off the lights. Go to vacuum it. Nearly fall over backwards when it pops up hafway up the tank. Realize it is a fry. (Insert excited shout)

10:05 - Spent the last 5 minutes trying to get the fry out while keeping the angelfish at bay. Lose sight of fry in gravel. Start digging through gravel. Lots of debris. Fish not happy.

10:15 - Finally give up and decide I buried the fry under gravel. Depressed.

10:16 - Actually see guppy drop. More exclamations. Mad scramble to get the fry. Net too big, wielder too clumsy. Guppy eats fry. Owner more depressed.

10:25 - Catches first fry. Realize I have nothing to put it into. Mad scramble through my mom's tupperware. Find one, put fry in. Mom not happy.

10:40 - 11:30 - Do some research online during the breaks. Wonder why the process is so slow. Suddenly remember I have a report due tomorrow I did not finish. More profanities. First gray hairs appear.

12:00 - Fish belly still swollen. Wondering when it will stop. Up to only 4 fry now. Rest were eaten too quickly.

12:30 - Fish still swollen, but no fry. Figure she must be all done. Bed time

Next morning - Platy is half it's original size. More scrounging around gravel for fry. More debris. More unhappy fish.

12 noon - Did not finish report. Recieve a D. More profanities

lol

lmao Chrona, well I guess time will tell. She really is HUGE though, so I know she has to be dropping them soon. Im not planning on trying to save the fry, but if a few make it, that would be cool.

What happened to the one u put in the container?

I cut out a rectangular piece of plexiglass and drilled a ton of tiny holes in it. Then, I sectioned off a corner of the tank, using a rubber band at the top to keep it on tightly. I'll take a picture tomorrow. I didn't have any place to put the fry, and I figured this way, the angelfish would get used to them and wouldn't attack them once released. For the first two days though....lol, the angelfish looked like he was going to break his mouth with all the ramming he did against the plexiglass.

Chrona,

First let me say that as a person who received an A in English 1101 and 1102, I think that the "report" you turned in to AC was well-written and entertaining and I give you an A on it.

Second, let me say that your story sounds exactly like what usually happens to me on any new endeavor that I undertake.....

Third, I would like to ask how in the HECK you have reached 900 posts since January... LOL....

You see how +50 posts has been purchased 48 times? Well.......lol jk

Not all my posts are as meaningful. I learned from the master of all forum spammers, Cocoa_pleco.

It was he, legend has it, that first employed the infamous :1: in order to reach the maximum post character length, and thus speed up posting rate.

Half the time, I'm on campus, bored. I have the most random free periods between classes, and I will just troll the forums sometimes. Plus, I'm a procrastinator, so anything I can do to put off that math homework, I will do.

I may be able to come up with something...hmmm. Or, I could just let them get eaten:wink2:
I don't really have a place to put them to let them grow up anyway.

I bow at the feet of the master of posting..... I have much to learn and I will strive to be a good student. As a long-time procrastinator (I'm older than you so I've been procrastinating longer), I should be studying right now for a Statistics test and for a Biology test but I was having forum-withdrawal so I'm takin a "break" to catch up here with you guys.

Nope.... sometimes I forget how many of these guys and gals are so young and then they say something that "shows their age" and I kind of have to do a double take and then I remember some folks here are still in high school..... but the diversity is part of what makes this so great.....

I am happy to hear that this is a pretty common experience. You can read my fry story in my intro posted Sunday. When I posted on Sunday, I had 3 babies. I have separated my now 30+ fry (mollies) in a small breeder tank in my primary tank, but I have no idea what to do with them if/when any of them survive to "fighting" weight. I've been putting out feelers among friends and co-workers to see if I have any takers. Anyone know if they have to reach a certain maturity before I give them away?

I should have let them fend for themselves, but I have a 11.5 month old who was born at 34 weeks. She is doing great, but I guess I still have soft spot for the small, and defenseless.

Some LFS will buy them off your hands for store credit, since locally bred fish tend to be of higher quality than the mass-produced variety.

*Sarah*

yeah, I'm planning on keeping some guppy fry sometime to give to my LFS for credit :)

IS IT normal for other fish to jab at the big preggers platy? The female Mollie is really jabbin at her gut.

Do you have a empty tank or can you buy a 5g for herself?

Well, I have the 10g planted, but I'm not sure if it's cycled yet b/c I'm out of test stuff for Nitrites. Last I checked Ammonia was 0, but that doesn't mean much. SO, all I can really do is leave her there for now since I don't want to put her in the 10 if I don't know if it's cycled.

cocoa_pleco
02-28-2007, 03:58 AM
yeah, leaving her is better than a uncycled tank

I am too lazy too read this whole thread, but i would just like to say good luck with the fry. I had a few platy fry myself awhile back ( i only found 2) i assume the others were eaten, but i lost both of them. I have had great luck raising guppy fry though. They are almost indestructable

Good luck with the fry. You will get alot more fry if you can but a 5g or something.
