I have looked up some info, but can someone give me some first hand knowledge on these things?

Hi mate, I have kept and bred these for years, they are a mildly
aggressive cichlid that are not to difficult to keep and breed.
Males will get to about 8", females 6", they are omnivorous so
feed them a varied diet, they like to hang out in caves or some
other type of cover but will spawn openly on a clean stone
or a peice of slate rock, like other cichlids they will become more
aggressive in spawning mode so if you have other tank mates
make sure you have plenty of room and hiding places.

The Danios may be fast enough to stay safe Red, but there's no gurantee,
like most cichlids if it fits in the mouth it will be eaten.
I would just keep them with other mildly aggressive cichlids or large dither
fish like Giant Danios or congo tetras.

damn, i got them confused with another fish, that I thought would stay smaller, and for my community tank. Dang it!

Yes Port acaras grow pretty quick bud, have you considered kribs or Rams?
I know you have Apistos.

I have rams and don't like apistos. I thought they only got 5" males and females got 4". I was wrong..
