I have had dwarf gouramis before and Ive looked at pictures all over the internet of them. But I thought I had bought 2 female gouramis for my one flame male and now that im starting to look at them they have very prominent orange stripes but no blue. One has a rounded dorsal fin and the other has a very pointy one. But my flame male has a pretty rounded fin. How important is fin shape in accordance to sexing them? Are they female or male? The male chases the two around but they seem very docile. Are they just juvenile males? Do they develop blue as they get older? Thanks for taking time to answer my questions!

I have 2 drawf females for my one flame male.
The dwarf females were in the tank with the males and it was obvious who was who (got them at That Fish Place) the females are smaller, no obvious striping, just silver. The males have the orange/blue stripes.

I think the size and shape of the dorsal fin is for full size gouramis, not dwarfs.

Males should be brighter and more colorful while females are dull. But that maybe difficult to tell these day with all the color morphs around. Most LFS don't even stock females because they are dull and they can't sell them. :22:

Well they have started to get used to their new tank and their coloring has improved. I think they are just ugly or juvenile males.:scry: I had really wanted females. They looked mostly gray to me but now they have pretty distinctive orange stripes and very faint blue stripes. They are nowhere as colorful as my male though.

Hard to tell from that photo . . . can you get a better one from a side view? Females should definitely be more silver though and not fully colored like the males.

Here is a side picture of one of them. They are very camera shy. In the picture it looks very brightly colored but in the tank it does not. From this picture Id say it is definitely a male....sigh....I wanted females. O well.][Only Registered Users Can See Links.] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.)

Yup, that's a male all right. You may have to special order for a female. Ask your LFS if they can do that. Or check out an on line store front like liveaquaria.com.

It's a male. No doubt about it. Just search it on a good fish website like fish2u and it should come up. Sorry bout that.

Yeah, looks like a male to me also. Those female Dwarf Gouramis are hard to find.

Like I said, I got my female dwarfs (dwarves?) from That Pet Place. But I did GO there to get them.
They may have them online to order.
