Species of Pictus?

I know there are some species that get to 12", and I have a Pictus, but I don't know what type he is. Could someone possibly show me the species of the one that gets to 12"?:help:

How about you google image a pictus cat and see if you could find any that look like yours, and then we will ID for you and go on from there.

Their are several species of pictus and a ton of subspecies. This site should help you

You want the columbian variety

Sadly I think I have the one in the first picture...how big does that one get? And can I usually find Columbian varieties mixed in with the other Pictus cats at a lfs? Because if I can pick up a Columbian variety pretty easily, my Pictus can still be traded in.

I think that is the columbian variety but it is hard to say without seeing them in person. And yes both of the common varieties are commonly sold in the same tank under the same name at many lfs's. The ones with the noticably smaller spots are the ones that get bigger.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind. I just needed to make sure because I don't want him to end up as an eventual snack for my Oscar when he doesn't grow any bigger or something like that happening to him.

I have 3- all from diff. stores, but all look the same but not sure which variety, they don't have BIG spots, but are not as big as the 'big' kind... one of them is ... 3 (?) years old? None of them are over 5-6 " TL. :ssmile: If it is a pimelodus pictus - I don't think you should worry to much about size if it has swimming room!

He's still only threen inches. Can you ID him? Please? I need to know so I can either keep him or trade him in...

Its hard to tell but I think its peruvian. How long have you had it?

Only a month at most. Do Peruvians grow to a foot?
