On saturday, I started my new 40 gallon tank with used gravel and filters. When I tested the water it was:
Ammonia 1.0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
PH 7.6

I just checked the water today and levels are at:
Ammonia 0.1
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 15-20
Ph 7.6

I added wood from big als on monday, with an anubias plant rooted on it

That' crazy that the water quality changed so quickly, but my brand new 29 gallon tank is still cycling! Is this 40 gallon cycled?!

If you started with used filters right from a cycled tank and had yours set up in less than 12hrs with fish in it,yes!
If you have not added fish I think you killed the cycle.:11:
The bacteria will only stay alive without an ammonia source for 12 hrs. They die off very quickly after thet.
Have you tested your tap water yet?

Yes I had a fish in it right after I set the tank up. I put my betta in. I think this weekend I am going to get some Black neon tetras for the 40 gallon, that I plan to add to my community tank (30 gallon) when it's ready. i want two parrot fish for my 40.

It should be cycled then! Just watch the tetras don't nip at the betas tail.:22:

Is the used media from the cycling 29gal tank....if so, then no, it's not cycled.

I'm confused

If you had "used gravel and filters" for the 40 gallon - where did they come from? If they came from your 29g thats not cycled, then nor is your 40g cycled.

And if they didn't come from your 29g, why not put them in there?

The used gravel, and filters came with the 40 gallon tank that I bought used online. They were not previously in my 30 gallon. the gravel was not dried out either when I went to pick them up, so I'm assuming the beneficial bacteria was still alive. Thus, resulting in my quick cycle

Oh...I guess I was confused as well....
Have you been adding an Ammonia source?

I would say yes, but it sounds like it was cycled to begin with if you used the rocks and filter from an established aquarium- those are the pieces you are technically cycling.

Yay! I am only going to add some of the black neon tetras this weekend, to be sure it is cycled. I am planning on having two blood parrots, and a small species of pleco, like a clown pleco in the 40, so the tetras will end up going in the 30 gallon.
