Breeding angels...

Some of you know I have a planted aquarium with 10 marble/black/veil angels.

I have been focussed on getting my plants growing ... and so I made a decision to add Fluorite to the existing substrate and do a 50% water change. Water coming in was about two degrees cooler than the aquarium water. And something in the fish was triggered.

Made a colossal mess. Trimmed the plants, cleaned up as best I could and now the tank is starting to clear from the brownish haze I created.

And what's suddenly going on - two of my angels started to square off - and chasied the other angels away. And then they picked one of the Val strands which I had just cut - so it was pointed straight up - and started cleaning it vigorously. I thought to myself - no way.

Way.

Not an hour goes bay and the female suddenly shows her breeding tube and out come the eggs!! Up and down the Val strand. And the male right behind her.

I wanted a breeding pair, but not just yet and certainly not when I tear up the tank the way I did.

They have been going at it for an hour now. Tons of eggs. I am surprised they paired off as quickly as they did.

There's nothing I will do with this spawn....just let them have fun. We'll see if the eggs survive the night.

I'll try and get a picture

You can see the eggs - they go up and down the Val.

Thats weird, I always thought they liked slate or swords. Thats awesome though. The mess they made of the plants is worth the experience of raising fry imo :)

Oh, and whatever you do, do NOT add ANY water clarifiers to the tank lol. I made that mistake and a nice thick layer of powdered flourite ended up on all my leaves. My guppy and Siamese algae eater and cleaning it up nicely though, for some reason.

Very cool. The water change likely triggered the breeding. I've found that fish rarely wait until you are ready. Once you are ready, they probably won't breed. Great picture. Congrats! Breeding fish is a sign you are doing something right!
