I moved my 20 gallon into my bedroom today and sitting here wondering if I will ever be able to sleep listening to that water splashing. I have the tank filled to the top!

I have my tank in my room
it doesnt bother me tht much
my two filters make no noise at all only noise I have is the air pump
the water noise is veryyyyy little cause I keep the water to the top.... the noise does get pretty annoying and makes it impossible to sleep when the water level is low

I have been disgusted with the Emperor on more than one occasion due to the hard prime. But I do have to say, that you can fill the tank to within an inch from the top and get no surface movement. Water remains absolutely still. Whether this is a great feature or not, for my angel fish it works great as angels don't like all that surface movement and it certainly makes it easier to feed them.
With my Penguins, the water shoots more out than down and filling the tank to the top still makes for water movement. All this water movement also means I am "topping off" the tank more often, as well, as it tends to evaporate quicker. Also means it would eat up more CO2 in a planted tank.
So.........filters are not all the same and some work better for some fish than others. I do believe I will dispense with bio-wheels in the future however. All filters pick up bio-loads so not hearing those wheels turning would be a plus for me. Not that they are terribly loud but enough so that I don't want to hear them cranking all night.

I have lots of turbulence on the water surface cause I have lots of bubbles and my aquaclear moves the water alot but my angel doesnt seem to care about it..... I do shut the bubbles off and reduce the filter flow to the minimum when feeding cause my angel seems to eat more bubbles than food when the water is moving...... he doenst seem to knw the difference between food or the bubbles floating LOL HE EATS EVERYTHING THT FITS HIS MOUTH I was adding salt on my water the other day and as the salt was sinking he was trying to eat it......:hmm3grin2orange:
u made me reconsider on my filter choice... I was gonna get a penguin 350b but I never tought about the bio wheels as more noise and everyone said it was a quiet filter...
.....my tank is about 4 feet away from my bed.....

Well, I have a Whisper 10 and you can get the water level higher than the lip of the outlet if you want to. That basically removes the waterfall effect, although it causes lots of ripples right at the surface.

on my tank I have an aquaclear and a tetra whisper the water is up to the lip of the filter and I have no noise and the water is up to the lip of the aquaclear too but I still had water noise from the aquaclear.... i was thinking of a way to change the waterfall on the aquaclear to make it throw the water foward just like the whisper filter so it wont make as much noise..... anyways I will be buying a filter soon so I m not really worried about noise on those I m worried about noise on my next choice of filter... I really wanted a fluvial 305 canister but for now it will have to wait..... so I decided to get a penguin 350b but I m still a bit concerned about the noise

I'm fairly convinced that Hobb's house sits on some kind of magnetic anomaly, perhaps a large vein of lodestone that is causing the mag drives in her power filters to fail.

It does make a different having tanks sitting in a large room or scattered about the room than having them all bunched together sitting 18 inches from your ears while you sleep. LOL It could be dangerous hearing all that splashing water in your sleep if you should have a weak bladder. :)
The largest noise I have is the water hitting the surface. That's one of the reasons I like the Emporer as the water comes nearly straight down so filling the tank full reduces this to nearly no noise at all. Don't let me change your mind about the Penquin as both of these are good filters and do equally well in my opinion. The Emperor to me is harder to prime.

OH....and I wanted to mention.......do you know the only HOTB power filter rated for up to 100 gallons is the AquaClear 110 with a gph of 500? NOPE. Found another one. TetraTech is also rated for 100 gallons.
Emporer 400 is 400 gph and rated for 80 gallons. Penquin 350 is 350 gph and rated for 75 gallons. Whisper 60 has a gph of 300 and rated for 60 gallons.
Those are the beans. I may grab one of these AquaClear 110 just to see how I like it. It has no bio-wheels.

my whisper is REALLY quit. They design the waterfall to slope down instead of shoot like a watergun like a aquaclear

I'm sure if you tied a piece of foam or filter block to the outlet lip, it'd be dead quiet. A very coarse foam, of course, so it doesn't impede output.

yeaa I had one aquaclear 110 same as 500 but i got a sweet deal on it I got a 40g tank and the hood for the filter the guy wanted to get rid of the aquarium and wanted a new filter.... I met him at the fish store.... m i lucky? lol and thts the tank I m using the 40 g so a penguin 350 will be more than good.... and its not for very long its only for now until I can get a canister
and the aquaclear 110 I ran it on the sink only to see if it was noise and its vey quiet but there is only space for about 2 diffirent filter media it comes with a foam and an activated carbon cartridges

Whispers have about the lowest rating of all the power filters. You may change your mind about them if you were filterating a 55 gallon tank with one. Nearly all the small filters are quiet.
However, I am sitting here now listening the the wheels rumbling away on my Emporer and sitting right next to it is the Penquin with totally quiet wheels. We just never what we get and what will do what. It's your job to buy them all, try them, and report back to me so I can then run out and get the best one without all the expense of switching. LOL

yea pretty convenient huh? LOL
so I guess I will get the penguin next week and see how it works cause the aquaclear is way too noise for me the whisper doenst make any noise at all but I dnt really like whisper filters they are crappy.... I like the aquaclear but I cant take the waterfall noise anymore even with water up to the top I still get the damn noise............

ROTF.......now you are starting to sound like me.
I can take my different filters and find things I do and don't like about all of them. Just wish we could put all the pro's together and come up with one darned good one.

Mail me your non-priming penguin, and with some plexiglass, nuts and bolts, I'm sure I could whip something up...lol
