View Full Version : Hithiker Snail ID please

I've been noticing 2 of these snails above the waterline for a few weeks in our sump. It spends 95% of its time out of the water and the rest of the time just below the surface. I think its a nerite because I read they are a tide pool species, but it doesn't quite look like any pics I've seen.

Am I right that its a nerite, or is it something else? Thank you

Nerite snails have a round shell, they kind of look like bowling balls. The picture you provided looks like a more pointed shell. I'm leaning towards a type of Turbo snail or maybe even a Trochus. Too hard to tell, maybe you could provided a close up photo?

One other thought... any idea where your love rock is from? That could eliminate a few possibilities.

Thank you, I'll try and get a better pic once I see it again.

The live rock came from all over the place so I have no idea where it comes from, lol. Most I bought off a guy breaking down a tank, some from the fish store, one piece off another guy, another came with my bta, and a few are from Florida (or so said the sign at petco, lol) I'll try and get a better pic next time I see him

Need a better pic, currently I am leaning toward a keyhole limpet... but honestly can not tell from the photo...

I don't think it is a keyhole limpet, they have mostly black shells... no?

If it is... watch out... they are known to eat corals like Acropora and Montipora.
