Brand new to this. Just saying hello. I've go a couple of tanks, both are cichlid tanks. Trying to grow plants in my larger tank with bigger cichlids, not having much success, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to AC! I've had nothing but success and criticism with my fully plants 42G Chichlid tank. Let me know what kind of problems your having and what type of fish you have? Hope I can be of some help to you!

Here is what I have in the tank

4 electric yellow
1 jack dempsey
1 pictus cat
1 cobalt blue
2 salvini
1 Blue Johanni

I have just recently moved these guys from a smaller tank (35G) to an larger tank (80G). I haven't planted any fauna yet, however, I want to start soon. The substrate is fine gravel, almost sandy, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Well you weren't kidding when you said you had some large guys in there! As far as the substrate goes, my Cichlid tank is VERY untraditional in the fact that I don't have a sandy substrate and do have a fertilizing soil under my gravel. Now in my 20G I do have a sandy substrate that is planted and just added fertilizers to the water and have had nothing but success. In my Cichlid tank, I notice that the waterweed is the only thing that occasionally gets nibbled on, but never to the point of destruction.

Oh, and I saw your subject line, I may live in Germany and know a phrase or 2, but I'm definately American!
