I was just on the Hikari site and I think they're phasing out their flake food and trying to move people over to their micro wafer. Here's a link where you can get a free package of wafer, if you send in the package of your old flake food.
Here you go, if anyone's interested...

I wonder if it has to be Hikari flake food. Just says your "current" flake food.
Mine all come in tins. Gez......no wonder I've been unable to find Hikari flake food on any sites. I've never found any yet.

I got a sample with the UGF I bought. My fishies love them. The gobble them up so fast. They are great because you can keep better track of them in the tank as your fish eat them. Plus they sink after a whlie for middle feeders. I feed them along with my flake food anyhow.

I do rebates and mail-ins all the time, and "current" food means whatever you're feeding your fish currently (Hikari wants you to switch from whatever you're using now to their product). I had a small plastic can of Tetra flake left over from when a tank of fish were confiscated and brought into the shelter. I was going to throw it away anyway, so I dumped the food and cut out the bottom round and disposed of that. I was left with just the side panel, which I slit up the side and smushed flat. To keep it flat I put a few pieces of scotch tape around the edges. It weighs nothing and fit into a regular envelope. It took a little hand-strength to make the initial cut through the plastic, but then it was easygoing.
In my experience I've found that the company just wants proof that you have an aquarium and actually have a need for their product (the item they request you send them doesn't have to be in perfect shape). They just want to know that you're not some schmoe who collects free things and re-sells them on ebay (no matter how miniscule, you should see the lengths some people go to in order to obtain a product they think will make them a dollar on ebay).
I only found out about Hikari Flake when I visited their website. When I looked for it online, I found only a handful of retailers for it, and most were on ebay and amazon.

I did a little looking-up of New Life Spectrum the other day and it did seem like it was a good product. Better yet, they have a flake food which I can use in case my future fish don't like pellets or wafers or whatever. However, their website sucks! In this day and age where everyone turns to the internet for info, why would you have such a shoddy site? First off, it took me freaking forever to find, and I only did so then because one retailer had a link. The product pages had no useful info whatsoever, and the only education I was able to find was through their forum, which is pretty skinny (but at least the moderator seemed to answer each question that was asked).
The only thing I did find useful (is useful the right word?) is the fact that New Life's head honcho is named Pablo Tepoot. Tee-POOT. He he! I'm so immature that I laughed outloud when I read his name. Tee-Poot....*snicker!*
Maybe I will change my forum name to Lauren B. Tee-Poot so I can giggle at myself everytime I sign on. thumbs2:
