View Full Version : Looking for tank leveling suggestions

The chosen spot (carpet over concrete in finished basement) for a new tank (72 bowfront) has it leaning forward and left (with tank empty). My initial reaction is to cut a piece of plywood in the same footprint as the stand. Then put shims under the plywood to get the tank level. Does this sound like it might work? Are there any other methods? Thank you.

That should work fine. I think the problem is that the edges of concrete floors curve up slightly as part of the construction process. How thick is your carpet? If it's low pile, it will be fine. If it's thick....meh...it's up to you.

You can use styrofoam as well. And the tank will naturally level itself on it

As a carpet installer, I would make sure I have the plywood at least 4 or 5 inches away from the wall, because the wood tackstrip along the baseboard/wall will not settle like the soft carpet pad, and it might end up leaning forward

Definately it should set out from the wall in a spot where you find is level. You'll want it out 5 inches should you ever decide to use a HOB filter anyway.
When I sat my tank up, it looked even to me but I had it 3 inches from the wall on one side and 5 inches on the other. Obviously, I couldn't use a HOB filter on the one side. Had to tear the whole tank down to move it 2 inches.
You could also cause stress on the glass having it uneven so just look for a nice level area.

With the styrofoam idea, is it a large piece to be used the same as the plywood? Plywood over styrofoam or vice versa? How dense or hard should it be? And any suggestions about where to find a piece? (I'm in a small town in BFE...) Thank you again.

Styrofoam goes between the tank and the stand to better equalize it. Any home improvement caries it by the sheets. A large sheet of cork board works the same.
