What size is your tank and future plans to keep them in? They get over 2' long..

Shortnose are very hard to come by in the hobby. In fact I just sold my 17 inch Shortnose for several hundred dollars. Shorties also tend to be one of the smallest of the Gar species...typically topping out around 18-20 inches. They are also one of the toughest gar to keep...they are skittish and prone to self destruction (mostly spinal injuries). Not a recommended beginner gar (I'm making assumptions here).

maybe try your hands at a Florida/Spotted Gar first? They are readily available and relatively easy to keep (as far as gars go).

You are thinking of an Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula). Florida gar max out anywhere between 16-24 inches in the home aquaria.

This is BS! No true gar species should be kept in anything less than 24" wide. I typically consider a 180 (2'x2'x6') the minimum for most true gar species...with the exception of the Alligator Gar, longnose Gar, and debatably the Cuban Gar. They can NOT be stunted to fit a 20gal!!!

I have been keeping Gars for years and have kept nearly every species (5 out of 7). All of my advice comes from first hand experience. Take that how you wish...

Please read my previous post more closely...

every species of gar can and will usually reach 16+ inches within their first or second year. you really need a tank with a width of 24" as a bare minimum.
