Has anybody heard of a Red Claw Shrimp? I can't find any info online about them.

They look almost identical to Ghost shrimp, but are much larger (2 inches, up to 4 inches, so I'm told), and they have more red colouration.

I picked up a couple of these shrimp, one for each of my Betta tanks. My Betttas tend to eat my Ghost shrimp, so these larger shrimp seemed like longer-term tank cleaners.

Red Claw are Macrobrachium cf. assamensis. Is that what you have?

I'm not sure...

My bigger shrimp totally nipped the fins of my Betta the first night I had them together, so I put it in a fishbowl and it died the next day. The smaller one seems to have disappeared (it ended up in a community tank, so a bigger fish probably got it).

Thanks for the lead, though I suspect won't be getting more of these shrimp :?

See http://www.petshrimp.com/redclawshrimp.html and http://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?t=431&highlight=claw. Red claws really should not be kept with bettas; they will, as you learned, attempt to consume most piscine cohabitants, and do best in a species setup.

I have good luck with filter shrimp or Bamboo shrimp as the pet stores usually call them. They will either filter food out of the water or pick it up from the bottom. Here is a site with some info on themhttp://www.petshrimp.com/bambooshrimp.html. I have never had them mess with any of my fish even small ones and they are big enough (about 3") so the larger fish don't mess with them. They do a good job of cleaning too.
