View Full Version : Adams Killie Breeding "How You Do It"

Well I have been breeding killie for a little while now. I have met all of the top killie breeders in the USA and have been going to shows and showing my Killies. I will show you the basic setup for killie breeding. If you have any questions be free to ask.

These are some of my boxes that i bought from walmart for 2 bucks each. This is the first thing you need on breeding killies.

This is my basic setup on breeding killies, those are yarn mops that I make myself. There is no java moss in there just mops.

This is just a basic killie mop. If people want me to do a DIY yarn mop thread, then be free to ask how. These hold the killie eggs and provide shelter for the female.

Now this is the basic stuff I use to maintain the killies home. You see water conditioner for the 50% every other day WC. I use the turkey baster to take out water and poop. I use the measuring cup for the live brine i feed them and also for taking out water

Now for the egg collecting and breeding. I feed them live brine which triggers them into breeding for me. They are egg layers and and females love to breed in there. Here is shown how i removed a mop from the container and searched for eggs. Sometime you could 2 -15 eggs in a mop everyday. Here is one egg from A. Striatum Lambarene.

Once I picked the egg from the mop, I then place into another container filled with Methane Blue. As shown below I already had it made and there is about 12 eggs in there now.

I then place the eggs into there any wait for them to become babies and remove to a separate container and feed live baby brine.
Have any questions, be free to ask..

So am I understanding this correctly? You have water and a yarn mop in plastic containers and that is it? No heat or filtration? Then the eggs are placed in another plastic container with just water to hatch? It sounds pretty straightforward.

yeah, if you want to you could add a air line to it. They key is 50% W/C and feeding them what they like.

Hobbs, jumping up and down with her hand in the air..........yelling......

I have a question!

How come you can't drop the mop and eggs into a tub and add the fungal meds to it that way?

03-31-2009, 05:11 PM
because then every time i would have eggs, I would have to make new mops because they lay eggs everyday. So I just reuse the mop in the same tank by picking off the eggs and placing them into other container and adding meds..

Does that make sense?

Thanks Sev! That sounds like a great project. I would like to try that some time. thumbs2:thumbs2:thumbs2:

I have a store here that has really beautiful killies. The store owner made it sound hard, but you make it look so easy!!!! What is your dilution of the methane blue? How long do they take to hatch? The store owner said you dry the eggs out and all this hard crap about when some kind of cirlce shows on the egg then you place them back in water! Can I keep a male and female in a 10 gallon full of hornswort? Oh this looks so exciting. I always ask about the killies at my pet store.

Well there is different types of killies, annuals (which you are talking about) and many other ones. You have to get something like stiatums like I have, or any type of garderni because there easy.
The eggs take about 14 to become close to hatching, and then you get a type of medicine bottle and bring them around with you for about 12 hours to shake them up (represents a egg tumbler) and once this happens they will hatch. Then its pretty easy to keep them in the baby stage. It takes a lot of practice, but killies breed alot of eggs :)

and I use something called nox ich for my meth blue..

05-27-2009, 02:16 PM
how much meth blue do you use?

06-15-2009, 04:14 AM
sorry I missed this question, I use one drop, just one.

Okay so that I understand this step by step:

1) Plastic container with breeding mop and male + female
2) Eggs are dropped and fertalized in the mop, pull and put in 2nd container
3) Container with water and eggs you add 1 drop of meth blue and wait to hatch?

Where does the tumbler effect come in and can you give an example of the size bottle you use and what stage?

Do you do a water change on the egg batch?

Does the #14 refer to hours or days?

In baby stage, you feed BBS, do you feed any specific brands and do you feed multiple times in the day or once?

Can you list some popular stiatums or garderni
