Hi
I have a 90 gallon aquarium at 78 degrees with 2 cichlids, an african clawed frog, a catfish, and a 3 inch 6 month old map turtle. I use a large canister filter and have adequate lighting.
There is a woman at my moms work who has a 5-6 inch wide painted turtle that she can no longer care for that she keeps in a 40 gallon tank. I'm not sure if it is male or female: she said she thought it was male because the front claws were short? (I thought females had short claws).

Anyhow, do you think that adopting this turtle into my current aquarium is a good or bad idea? I've heard if they are introduced when young, they will get along, but the painted turtle is older...
Tell me what you think! Thanks alot!

Short nails are female and larger, but painteds don't get that big to begin with.

If it has not been with fish it will probably see them as food.

It must have a basking area where it can completely dry off and bask under heat and adequate UVB lighting.

Thanks for the response. What do you think in terms of the smaller male map turtle and the larger painted getting along with eachother???

That depends on the individuals.
