Getting a 28 watt PC fixture, flourite, and wood for a DYI stand for my 10g. Who'd a thunk a 10g would end up costing so much? :/ A DIY CO2 reactor will probably be in the works too.

The quest for the picture perfect planted tank continues....lol

I did! *raises hand*. Youll get it all done, eventually. But this is the fun part, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Setup for any tank is always going to cost more than you think. Hell, I was GIVEN my tank with the stand and still spent almost $600 getting all the stuff for it. And that's BEFORE I even got fish! LOL

For a 45 gallon????? How does that add up? Is the substrate gold? lol

On the plus side, with 2.8watts per gallon, I might actually be able to get a nice hairgrass lawn. With 1.5 w/g, the darn thing just sits there not spreading shooters as if it's mocking my incompetence.

And no, to me, the fun part is sitting back, not having to spend any money, and enjoying it all :)

It does add up quickly. I was given my 55 gallon tank, filter, Jack Dempsey and Blue Gourami and have spent almost $900! It is crazy. I jsut dumped $75 into my 10 gallon last week...
You will get your perfect tank eventually!

I've spent around 500 Euros on my planted 42G! It's hard to spend all of the money, but sooo worth it in the end!

Posted ealier, but since we're in the mood.....just spent $90 for rocks - my friends laughed at me - actually it was for 75 lbs of fluorite for my 4 tanks, and $70 for a current satellite light fixture for my 28 gal bow. Was reading some reviews on it and people said if you have a freshwater plant setup to buy the daylight bulb at the same time to replace the dual 50/50 daylight/actinic compact fluorescent bulb that comes with it. So now I have to order that bulb and wait another week; good thing they're on sale for 20% off at DrsFostersSmith.com. Bad thing about DRSF&S is that when you checkout the tell you how much more you can spend before you jump up to the next shipping charges category. Which menas, I'll be spending that much more. [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] Now I just need to figure out what else to get. [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

Not sure about the satellite fixture's 50/50 bulb, but I know for the Coralife fixture that I'm getting (it has a 50/50 bulb in it too), the original bulb does great with plants. I've also seen from several sources that the intensity of the bulb always trumps the spectrum. Plus, I don't think plants have a problem absorbing the blue end of the spectrum right? Apparently, 50/50 bulbs also make fish like neon tetras and cardinals pop out too.

The actinic lights are more suitable for a reef tank. A bulb with more visible light is more beneficial to plants than an actinic bulb. The less intense light does make colorful fish stand out more. A bright white light tends to washout the colors of some fish, depending upon how much light the fish normally gets in its natural environment . Also, bulbs with a lower kelvin rating are cooler, producing more blue light, which tends to wash out the blue in fish. Whereas the higher, warmer kelvin rated bulbs have more red and wash out those colors.
