My 2 goldfish in an inadequet tank are laying on the bottom. They can swim fine but it seems they choose not to. Their top (dorsal?) fin is held erect. Do I feed them boiled peas? What should I do?

Do they get up when someone goes near? I think they are just resting, as my goldfish did the same thing, but perked right up when someone came near because they must have thought food was coming.

Are they doing this all the time or just a certain time of day? Do they swim to the top for food? I have heard of fish sleeping on the bottom of the tank but not golds, mine are always active. I hope they are alright.

are they bloated?

Lethartic behavior is often from bloat or internal parisites.

Keep an eye on them that doesn't sound good. Are they bent over or just lying? Are they feeding at all? I hpoe they're ok. I lost my largest goldie last year he was about 10inches and was lying on his side one day dead as a doornail - I lost it and burst into tears, was devastated as I'd had him for about 4yrs!

One of them looks a very tiny bit larger in the head and has tiny brown spots a bit above between his eyes. They will eat if I feed them and they will swim around though. I don't have a est kit right now, but I'm guessing that the ammonia nitrate an nitrite are zero because it has been up since May and I change more than half the water once a week.

An update: I'm seeing them on the floor alot less now. Does petsmart offer free water testing?

Keep an eye on the spots to see whether they turn black. When my goldies have had nitrate burning their fins and tails & sometimes around their eyes have turned black once they started healing, they do go back to normal. I would definitely try getting the water tested, it sounds like a big problem.

One of the golds belly is getting pretty fat, and when the light shines through, it looks black.

One of my goldfish sleeps on the bottom. During the day he will lay down if the other fish don't include him or if he is constipated.

I saw goldfish in Walmarts one day all laying in a big pile at the bottom of the tank. Dozens of them. I thought there had been a huge die off until I walked up to the tank and they all took off swimming. It was odd to see.
