I recently finished a fishless cycle on my new 75g tank. The filter is a 29g SUMP thatis located underneath the 75g tank. I use a 700gph return pump to get the water back from the SUMP. My problem is that it seems I have too much water circulation in my 75g tank due to the power of the return. After the cycle I put 5 Discus in the tank, although they seem healthy they seem bothered by the water current and tend to only stay in certain areas of the tank(areas with least flow).

Water quality is a big issue when dealing with discus so I do not want to slow the filtration down. Is there anyway I could create less water movement in the tank without slowing down the return?

My first thought was to put a "T" at the end of the return and flow some of the water straight up to divert some of the flow. Anyone have any other ideas?

First let me say that I don't have much experience with sumps but if I remember my fluid mechanics classes from years ago if you increase the size of the outlet you will get the same volume but less velocity in the water. That being said can you get a coupler that will allow you to use a larger hose diameter?

the best way to slow that returning water down is an outlet like this ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]) one:

you can either build it yourself wich is basically just drilling holes in a tube that you will later conect to the outlet or buy one.

This is what I am looking for. GREAT idea. My return is made with 3/4 PVC piping. All I will need is a piece about 4 inches long with holes drilled all around the sides. I really think this should work. Thanks.
