I was just wondering if granite was safe to use in an aquarium without altering water chemistry. I can't seem to find driftwood or rocks in stores locally without paying an arm and a leg, but New Hampshire is the granite state, so we have a large abundance of granite, and if its safe I'd love to use some. Thank you for any help

granite should be fine. It is very hard and gives up it's minerals to the water very, very slowly - so even if it did have minerals that were undersireable it should be fine.
I say this from my knowledge of Northern Ontario geology and it's effects on lakes (less minerals means less life in the lakes; but less fishing pressure makes that all unnoticeable).
so. . .caveat emptor - I do not answer your question from direct knowledge of aquariums. I am quite sure I am giving good advice though.
real answer would be to put some vinegar on it and see if it fizzes or bubbles.

Like sleeby said, do a vinegar test. If it doesn't fizz, give it a good wash in hot water with a stiff brush and you're good to go.

Granite... holy crap! Lucky fish... now my wife says "if his fish get granite, we can put in a granite counter in the kitchen.
Could you please start a new thread asking if pine and linoleum are safe for fish tanks...?

Thank you, I'll start looking for some decent pieces and then give them the vinegar test

lol, we have tons of granite around here, you trip on it every time you go hiking. I can ship you a bunch of pieces and you can glue them together to make a counter top :hmm3grin2orange:, although shipping enough granite for a counter may cost the same as a counter top

Now my wife wants to know if you are planning a marble bathroom for the fish too!

Didn't mean to cause a remodel :hmm3grin2orange: We haven't found any granite yet, but maybe we will before your done with the bathroom.
Speaking of busting things down and totally off subject. The house 2 doors down was demolished today. It was a early 1900's 2 story, very well built, and it took them less then 2 hrs to completely tear it down with an excavator. It was awesome:hmm3grin2orange:
