My store carries filigree, hornwort, wisteria and amazon sword (potted or straight). I have standard lighting that came with the hood and aquarium kit and I can't upgrade right now, I just adopted two guinea pigs and I need to get them a better cage before I go upgrading my aquarium. My substrate is gravel and my stocking is as below. I'm considering changing to sand for the benefit of my ghost shrimp and cories. My stocking is in my signature. My tank has a fair amount of algae since I have no algae eater types and I keep the lights on 12 hours a day or mire. Would I be okay with any of the aforementioned plant types?

Check out this link [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] lets you see plants according to how much light you can give them. Hornwort would be fine in your tank. The amazon would need a lot more light. You can get away with using gravel and having plants, just add a fertlizer tablet near the roots of the plants. Sand is fine, but for some plants they don't do well in sand, since sand compacts around the roots of some.

Not sure what kind of lighting you have but if it is incandescent bulbs you can cheaply upgrade to compact florescent bulbs for only a small investment of less than 10 bucks though that still probably wouldn't be sufficient.

Cool. Will hornwort be okay anchored in the substrate, or does it need to float?

Z Fish: Yeah, I know, but like you said it's not that much of a benefit. :| So I will stick to what I have for now.

You can anchor it and it will be fine. I just suck the bottom of mine in the substrate and it holds it down pretty well. Stuff grows like crazy too.

Perfectttt. And that will be cool too, maybe my catfish will come out a little more often and my tetras will look less sketchy and nervous with more plant cover growing in. Thank you very much!

My hornwort is down in my substrate. Grew from about 8" to 40" in a month. Grew 3" one day.
