View Full Version : Egg Bound, Fat, or Diseased?

I don't know if my fish has a medical problem or is just greedy. One of my female Zebra Danios has a very fat, round belly. It almost looks like she has eggs in there, but this has been going on for three or four weeks now. She seems to get even more bloated if I feed her freeze-dried bloodworms. She is one of the more aggressive fish in my aquarium and is often the first to feed. Her appetite is definitely not suppressed. She is active and not showing any symptoms other than a large belly. My other female Zebra Danio is slightly rounded in her belly, but not as much, she looks like I would expect. The two males are much thinner and also very active.

Questions:
How long is the normal gestational period for an egg scatterer like the Zebra Danio? How long between scattering - so far I have not noticed any such activity, since their arrival in my home on December 30, 2006.

If she is egg-bound, is there a way to treat this?

If she is not egg-bound, could she be just fat, or should I be looking at other problems. No other symptoms. If just fat, would it be good to separate her from her tank mates so that I can put her on a diet?

I'm experiencing a similar problem with a female zebrafish. My wife works with zebrafish and thinks that they might just be egg-bound (though this isn't typically seen when males are present). Zebrafish regularly release eggs, so as to why she's holding them we aren't sure. We too are beginning to wonder if their might be a problem. This female eats considerable more than her 4 tank mates (at least two of which are male), and is highly possessive of the entire tank (often seeking out new regions to scare the others off). Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge has some suggestions.

I now have an obese female Red Platy to go with my fat female Zebra Danio. Both have males of their respective species in the tank. Both are aggressive, eat like pigs and seem perfectly fine other than the fact that neither is producing young and both are very fat.

I guess this is just the way that they are. On the plus side, my tank is not being overrun by fry.
