View Full Version : Conflicting Information

I was reading another thread and it mentioned conflicting information on the internet.
As I was setting up my 55 gal. for my Jack Dempsey I wanted to get facts on the JD, water temp, ph, hardness, food, etc. I recorded the information from about eight sites and found wide ranges of opinions. After I had all the numbers I just averaged them. I figure if there's a problem I'll blame the entire internet.
Has anyone else noticed the wide range of "facts" out there?

I go here for most of my fish info. The place is run by vets.

I have found that information varies widely between websites, forums and books. That's why I like being on a forum like this one. Even if the information is not all identical, it gives me the opportunity to find out what works from more experienced fish keepers. Sometimes it provides the opportunity to see what doesn't work before I try it.

Yes, conflicting information is everywhere from the size fish get to what they are compatibile with. One site will say a fish can grow to a foot and another says the average is 5-6 inches. I believe there's a big difference between those caught in the wild and those tank raised.

I have heard LiveAquaria has bad info but very good livestock.

For JDs I would do about 82F (high metabolism = better growth, immunity, etc.), harder water, higher pH, but most importantly big frequent water changes, tons of filtration, and ONLY NLS food. What does the water out of your tap hold at pH wise? What filtration?

Just like anything else in life, there's good and bad when it comes to the information on the internet about fish. There are good and bad forums as well. Before I found this one I was on the snootiest site that JUMPED down my throat because I'd never heard of fishless cycling...Anyway, point is, all u can do is research, and then ask the good ppl on here and they'll verify the info lol..it's what I do anyway, and it's working so far.

These are the stats that I compiled from the internet that was averaged from the sites I looked at. (For a Jack Dempsey). Temp. 77, GH med-hard, ph 7.2. I keep the temp at 77 my water is med- hard. my ph is 7.8 I haven't tried to lower it because I read that it's better to keep it steady that to have it changing. He's now about 4' long and living peacefully, (So Far) with a 31/2" firemouth and a small pleco. I have a Emperor 400 filter now and am assuming I'll need to beef that up later when they get bigger. It gets a 40% water change weekly at this point.

pH is fine, I would bump up the temp for the reasons previously mentioned. I would add a Fluval 405 before too long, as well as bump up the size of the water changes if you are comfortable with bigger changes and haven't had any problems with them so far. What are you feeding?

I was thinking about the fluval 405. I'll start doing bigger water changes if that's what I should be doing I've been giving them Hikari cichlid staple, tetra min flakes, tubifex worms, shrimp pellets, and he's nibbled on a little lettuce.
Thanks again for all the good advice!!!

So they don't follow their own advice...? lol

It would appear as if this statement is self-contradicting. I've already found liveaquaria to have some pretty good general info. Some specific stuff you'll have to find in other places, but that is only because they are a store, and thus don't have the bandwidth to devote 2 pages to each type of fish they sell.

Hey Yankee,

Is your avatar Paul Bunyan? My family used to go to that restaurant when I was a kid, in the Wisconsin Dells. I hated the cups...they were rustic tin cups that warped the taste of your drink. I only drink water so it was really bad.

If you can find it definitely switch your fish over to New Life Spectrum, it is hands down the best food out there and their colors, growth, health, etc. will be amazing, there is a reason why it is the only thing all three of my African cichlids and my discus get. Check out their site, especially the testimonials section ]here ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.).

Good site and at least tells you where you can buy it online. It's pretty hard to find and should be more available in other sites. They do carry it at Arizona Gardens which happens to be my favorite site, tho.
