I just bought a new bulb for my tank from a local hardware store. It's a 5000 k bulb, and I put it in expecting things to look whiter, but the whole tank has a green cast to it! Is that just because of my plants? I'm not sure how much I like it. I kinda do, but it's such a contrast to the all glass bulb I had before!

the green is probably cast-off from your plants, 5000k is white

Indeed...plants do their best IMO between 5000K-6500K, Im running a 5500K setup on my 55G planted and its near a tank with a 6500K bulb quite a bit of diffrence. The 5000K is white, but I think it may look greener because youve became more accustomed to bulbs with a more blue hue. A 6500K bulb may be a perfect solution to pleasing your eye and your plants needs.

they give off a nice blue, one of my metal halides on my 125g reef has a 20000k and it gives a deep color

All Glass stock tubes are 8000 k, hence the blue cast.
That's a great graphic cocoa, especially for beginners!

Yeah, I figured it was from my plants. What a difference in appearence the lighting can make! I'm getting a piece of glass cut for the top front of the tank so I can eventually stick another light on there. I will probably get 6500 k bulbs to balance the lighting a bit, but I realize they won't do too much. I'm sure I'll get used to it, and even like it if I can get my plants to do a bit better. They do look more green in this light :)
