View Full Version : What I learned about my Python this weekend.

So I was doing a large water change on my tank this weekend to finish off a fishless cycle and I accidentally knocked the python off of the faucet while the tank was draining. To my surprise and delight the siphoning action never failed. I really had no idea that I only need to run water to get the siphon started and after that I could turn off the water and even disconnect the pump from the faucet while it drained. I've had it for over 6 months now and all that time I've been running and wasting water while draining my tanks. /sigh

that works as long as the sink end is lower than the water level in the tank, saves water toothumbs2:

Yep....don't feel bad. I owned my python for about 6 months before I realized this. The only time I will leave the faucet on while draining is if I'm pressed for time such as last night. Otherwise I pretty much have it down to a time for a 25-30% water change in my 100gal which is about 45 minutes.
Me, being a cheap B*&-×^&*....refused to turn on the water while emptying the tank....but then, I only use mine to put water back into the tank. I still siphen my 125g with the hand siphen. I DO however, need to buy a nice little wagon (red preferably hehe) to transport the water to the tub for emptying purposes.....

I knew it still syphoned but it was only a dribble when I used it for the first time, (and might I say I LUUUURRRVE that yoke)I have my toddlers running around and need to do it fast, plus Ireland doesn't charge for using water. It fitted on my 'irish' tap no problem, looking forward to the waterchanges everytime now. Sorry still very happy with my purchase

After years of hauling 5g buckets I just got myself a python,
unfortunately it will only fit on my outside tap which is cold water.
I'll get a new fitting later in the week to fit the inside tap,
can't wait to try it out, no more workouts. thumbs2:

I got a water changer by Aqueon this weekend and will never be without one again! I got the 25 foot, but I figure I can always get more tubing later? I imagine the stuff they have on the roll at Home Depot would work as long as it was the same size?
anyways, I fell in love. It was the best thing I have spent my money on in a long time!

It's almost worth changing yer faucet to one that yer python fits lol...I was having to remove my screen window before and run my garden hose through it.... VERY much a pain!!! But them I have a little "weight" problem....the exercise was probably the only thing keeping me alive (as Mith takes another bite of his twinky!)

run it out the door,
I'm cheap and wouldn't pay the price for a python.
I bought a cheap gravel cleaner at Wal mart, added hose ends, bought 2- 25' RV water hoses, I have a 50'+ homemade python at 2/3 price:hmm3grin2orange:

It's fun to have projects that you can do yourself that give you a sence of accomplishment!.... but I gotta be honest with ya now....I'm a little older... a little lazy and a LOT fatter (hence no energy).....so when ever I get an opportunity to pay this thing called "money" in exchange for "product" typically I don't hesitate....
Heck, if I drop a dollar bill on the ground.....I gotta drop a 20 just to make it worth my while to bend over to get the dollar!

While this "will" work to syphon out your tank, its highly doubtful you will achieve enough suction to effectively scour your gravel. My guess is that you have not been getting great suction from your faucet so therefor dont notice a difference. Try this!
Hook your python up to your outside garden hose. Turn on your garden hose and then put the syphon into the tank. My guess is that you will recognize an incredible difference in suction power. This is invaluable for larger tanks and tanks with gravel that need a good cleaning.

Hmmmm, I never run the python to take water out of the tanks. I have a window right next to each of them, just syphon the water out and onto the flower beds. Then python the water into the tank from the hose at the sink.
Flowers usually look great til mid-summer too!

I run the water while I drain because it's a lot faster than waiting for the water to drain by itself. I have a well, so I have no water bill. thumbs2:

keep in mind your gravel can and will harbor nitrates and other pollutants in your tank over time so occasional gravel vacing is pretty much mandatory unless you have sand. Even sand needs the occasional redistributing.

i use both the acive and passive draining methods. When i am not gravel vac-ing i just start the flow then let it do it's thing. When im cleaning gravel or in a hurry then i use the powered suction. I love that the thing gives you so many choices.

for me it's just the opposite, I get more suction from gravity

I've had these two goramai's for at least two years. One has a big belly but seems happy and is swimming around and still eating. Also the belly has been big for the past week and the fish doesn't seem to be in any discomfort or showing any other signs of being sick. I've had fish with dropsy before and they seem to get sick fast and die quickly. If she is pregnant do you let nature take its course or how do you protect the offspring?
Harry--
you should start a new thread, "hijacking" is generally considered bad form. To answer your question: gouramis don't get "pregnant" in the typical sense. Females release the eggs, males fertilize, then the males carry them to a bubble nest where they hatch. The male will protect said nest, even from the female(you should remove her after the spawn) Your big belly could just a little overeating, or it could be egg swelling. Don't feed them for a few days, or just feed them some peas.
