So....

I really liked the sand substrate idea that was going around and decided to take my paycheck and do it! Thanks for everyone who answered my questions and thanks to MollieLover for her article on it!

I got playsand from Home Depot b/c I couldn't bring myself to pay over $1 per pound ($25 for a 25 lb. bag) of aquarium sand at Petsmart. The Home Depot sand was less than $4!!

Had lots of fun at Petsmart. I got more plants: Now I have an Amazon Sword, 2 of something..crimity: wrote down the name and can't find it!: (they are the ones in the middle/back) and one Ludwigia. Plus the Kyoto Grass. It was doing well so I kept it.

Also got piece of fake driftwood. I would like to get real, but that is not in the budget right now...

And, a bubbler disc, and air pump to go with it. I figure a little extra aeration can't hurt right?

Picked up more test strips: I really wanted the Freshwater Master Kit b/c it was on sale, but they had none!

Oh! And 5 Neon Tetra's joined my group! I was leaning towards Rasboras, but I really liked the Tetras once I saw them all there!

And I got a Mag-Float for like, 3 bucks!! Can't beat that!

But the best thing I got was an Aqueon Water Changer. Like a Python. I got 25ft, wish I had gotton longer, but this is fine for now! I don't know why I never got one of these before! Changing water was a breeze! I will never be without one again! BEST $40 I have spent in a long time!

Everyone is doing great! The Neons love playing in the bubble disc, and the betta likes the driftwood, he likes poking in and out of the holes!

Here is a regular view of the tank:

Let me know what you think!

And to round out the evening I bought some of Ed's Natural fish food so hopefully I will get that soon!

Looks great. I changed from gravel to sand as well and I love it. Looks like you washed it well too. If you want cheap real driftwood go find a creek, river or other body of water and poke around there.

Just a note: you may want to move the sword to the back corner. My sword in 3 weeks has grown to fill the entire back right corner of my 10 gallon and is rapidly filling in the entire right side. Since its in the back I don't mind but if its in the front like yours it may end up blocking your view of a large portion of the tank. Plus it will hide your heater and filter better. Also, how come the water level is down that far?

Looks nice, I love the look of just plain white sand in one of my tanks as well. You may want to use the air pump during the night, during the day the plants should give out o2. For the water changer you bought, you can easily build yourself an extension for it. Petsmart has the python stuff on sale, and you can buy the male/female couplers on clearance there if your store has any left, a pair of them cost me about $4, then buy some clear tubing by the foot at home depot. Good deal on the mag float, never seen one that cheap here.

Har Har. The water was low because I had been sticking my hands in the tank all day. Rearranging this, moving that! I couldn't wait to take pics, but it is back up to normal now!

Can I put more fish in it?

The betta, 5 neons and 3 ghost shrimp inhabit it now! I would still love to get some rasboras or maybe something different? I am afraid I am close to my stocking capacity though?
