So....
I really liked the sand substrate idea that was going around and decided to take my paycheck and do it! Thanks for everyone who answered my questions and thanks to MollieLover for her article on it!
I got playsand from Home Depot b/c I couldn't bring myself to pay over $1 per pound ($25 for a 25 lb. bag) of aquarium sand at Petsmart. The Home Depot sand was less than $4!!
Had lots of fun at Petsmart. I got more plants: Now I have an Amazon Sword, 2 of something..crimity: wrote down the name and can't find it!: (they are the ones in the middle/back) and one Ludwigia. Plus the Kyoto Grass. It was doing well so I kept it.
Also got piece of fake driftwood. I would like to get real, but that is not in the budget right now...
And, a bubbler disc, and air pump to go with it. I figure a little extra aeration can't hurt right?
Picked up more test strips: I really wanted the Freshwater Master Kit b/c it was on sale, but they had none!
Oh! And 5 Neon Tetra's joined my group! I was leaning towards Rasboras, but I really liked the Tetras once I saw them all there!
And I got a Mag-Float for like, 3 bucks!! Can't beat that!
But the best thing I got was an Aqueon Water Changer. Like a Python. I got 25ft, wish I had gotton longer, but this is fine for now! I don't know why I never got one of these before! Changing water was a breeze! I will never be without one again! BEST $40 I have spent in a long time!
Everyone is doing great! The Neons love playing in the bubble disc, and the betta likes the driftwood, he likes poking in and out of the holes!
Here is a regular view of the tank:
