Seeing as how its your tank I think the proper question would be is, what do YOU prefer.

I vote for #2 as well! african cichlids are for when you're on your 3rd tank and are not sure what you want! Of course this is just an opinion :)

Neither. (sorry)
I would go South American.
I really find this hard. Because one it is not my tank. And two every-one has there differences. So IMO I live African Cichlids. But I also love the South American Cichlids. As for the Brichards I am no fan. But that is me.
So for me I would go with the African if you take the time to study them, and plan very carefully about your stocking, and have the money to get them, alone with a proper LFS which can supply nicely sexed fish for you.
IMO and IME I have found the south American Cichlid better to start with than the African Cichlids. Much better in temperament. So for a beginner I would go SA.
But the choice is up to you. Choose what you like.

I'm more into the African cichlids, but in the end whatever you prefer. I think I'm in a minority here!

wow i like how everybody has their own preferance on fish, good variety, but i do want to say i finally decided to keep my africans because i realized the reason i wasnt happy with them was because they didnt fit in with their current surroundings(plants and driftwood) so after planning my aquascape ive decided to got to the rockyard tommorrow and pick out some rocks for a malawi tank Thanks guys:22:

Hey guys i got the rocks now and im planning on changing everything out sometime this week, but for some reason i just randomly got really interested into lake Malawi and al the life it has in it. Thats the real reason I have aquariums, not only for the fish, but to be able to have a large part of nature in your own home. I think this is really what fishkeeping is all about.
