I got some of this today. This is just a variety of java fern that stays small, right? Does it grow any slower or faster than "normal java fern"?

Can you put up a photo? Where did you get it?

I've never heard of dwarf java fern but a few people have posted about it recently. I've only heard of broadleaf and narrowleaf java ferns. Maybe they are selling narrowleaf as dwarf now? Photo's would be really helpful though.

I've seen the LFS here sell "pygmy" java fern, but since they're about half the price of the normal java fern I'm thinking they are probably just daughter plants from one of the plants they've had in the store. And since java ferns grow so slowly, you're unlikely to notice much of a difference in growth for a while once it's seperate from the mother plant.

Your right. It's just a narrow leaf java fern.
