I've read a bit here on bogwood, and need to get some for my BN pleco. I'm still unsure what steps I need if I buy it at a lfs. Also would it be okay to buy at a petco or petsmart?

I've purchased both malasian driftwood and the mopani wood at petsmart (or was it petco?) Just did the soak in hot hot water in the sink a few times to get the tannins out.
Funny thing is, the malasian wood is clear in the water, no tannins released now at all. The mopani is STILL turning the water a bit. Maybe that's just how that kind is.

When I haul it from the river, I use a wire brush outside and rinse in hot water. Throw it in a trash can, fill with hot water and a whole box of table salt (for bugs) and leave it for a couple days. New wood has already been processed. I toss it in the tank as it is. Some like to soak it but I don't bother.

I thought it was just clown plecs that needed wood in there diet?Oh well,no matter, wood looks good in most any tank.If you get it from a pet shop a simple hosing down of it will suffice.
Yea I get my logs from river lakes pods and places like that. Just a simple job, a though clean and that is all. And it is free.
As for getting it a a shop I have had no trouble. But mind you some shops will try to sell you wood which is not really good for fish tanks, in that is rots faster than normal hard wood.

The lfs had some medium pieces for 9.99 PetCo was 10.49 for some medium stuff. Petsmart had mopani wood for 6.99 and some other driftwood as well, it was on the shelf though and I'm not sure if it would sink.
I'm going to look at petland tomorrow to see what they have. IMO they've always been a bit overpriced though.

Mopani or Malaysian wood will sink regardless of being dry. The wood is so dense it simply doesn't float.
