I was watching my platies the other day and saw an orange, egg-looking object drift to the bottom of the tank. I didn't actually see it come out of the platy, but they are the only fish in the tank. This seemed odd to me, obviously, since they are livebearers. Could it have been an egg that I saw and, if so, what does that mean?? (It was promptly eaten, so there wasn't much time for further inspection)

It is basically a "miscarried" egg. Didn't fully develop. It happens, and is a delicious snack for the fish. Nothing to worry about.

Got it, thank you! I'm quickly getting attached to these "cheap" fish that were merely meant to help me cycle my tank... I may be too attached to be able to rehome them later! (blush)

No probs, I was concerned at first too when my platies had underdeveloped eggs...then she had about 18 babies and I wasn't so concerned anymore lol. Platies are great, I don't blame you for keeping them.
