Well, I am actively searching for an aquarium stand for a new 75 gallon tank. Our LFS has a stand but it is a "lip" only stand, I am sure you know which one I am talking about. How safe are they? My tank will be away from the wall a little bit to accommodate a HOB filter and I am worried about bumps and moving. What do you think? I value your opinions!! Sharon

Are you talking about the metal stands? If so, I would say no. I have one. I keep it in the kitchen behind the table and would not have it with kids running around the house, in a high traffic area or on carpet. It's my planted tank stand and I am going to put a board on it and turn it into a stand stand for outside!
If talking about wood, all you need for glass tanks is a frame around the top and one down the center. For acyrlic, you need a solid wood top.

if your looking for something cheap and quick you could always go for a good old cinder block stand and if you don't like how it looks you could always drape some fabric around it that's what iv done, and as for the lip only stands i dont trust them i might just be paranoid but the ones i have seen look flimsy.
Hope it helped some.

Hi! No, the stand is a pine stand with 2 doors in the front. I think they are pretty standard at most pet stores.

I think the pinewood stand would be alright.
I would just caution on where you position the tank. Position the tank across the floor joists, not parallel with them. Also, avoid placing the legs of the stand on weaker-type sections - like on top of knotholes in a hardwood floor. When finished, make sure its level :)

Hi! The problem I have is that the tank will run parallel with the joists. I checkd under the floor in the basement and it is a small span, the joist run around 13 feet right onto a beam running across the basement. I figured the smaller span would support the tank rather than a large span. What are your thoughts on this?

If you can set it up over top of three joists you should be fine.If you set it up length wise over 1 or 2 it may sag the floor.I had to put up a post under my tanks to stop the sag.
Those stands are made for aquariums and should have no problem supporting the tank.
I prefer more than strong enough and build my own!

That's a good idea. I will pick up a floor jack tomorrow and set it up before adding the tank. Thanks for the thought about the stand. I was really quite upset. I bought and paid for the stand, it still had cardboard on it. When I removed the cardboard, found the wood had pulled apart in many spots. So, I'll return it Tuesday as I do not have2 1/2 extra hours this weekend to drive back up to return it to a store that doesn't even have another in stock. I am going on Big Als and buying one there. Lighter in weight anyways!!!
