The best advice you will get here is the "fishless cycling" method for your tank before you ever buy a fish. Check it out.

It's nice to see someone doing their homework before getting the fish. Many of us, jump in headfirst and then learn all the things we should have done. I was unwise the first time around although I did talk to the lfs first - not as helpful as I needed them to be. Now I am being more cautious and taking things slowly, and I was much more prepared. Of course, I still found out after cycling with my Zebras that there is a way to cycle a tank without fish. I didn't lose any Zebras to the cycling, but I found out the hard way that it is good to cover the filter intake on back-mounted filters when hosting small species of fish.
