i wanted to tell you all the experience i had when i was visiting a fish shop the other day. it was in bradford, UK. the name was QSS aquarium and koi centre. i dont live in bradford so dont often go to shops in that area but my dad past it one day when working and decided to take me their. when i went, first impressions was it looks good. they had some amazing and wonderful fish, hundreds of common fish like cories, tetras, livebearers, but also some un common ones such as sting rays, disus, arowanas and generaly fish you wonted see in your lacal place. after spending the best part of an hour looking at the hundreds of tanks, i decided to get 2 kuhlies. the man bagged then up and i also asked if he can throw some malysian trumpet snails as they would help my sand tank. i didnt see him put them in as i was still looking at the fish but he opened another fish tank so i guessed he added some. (the malysian trumpet snails were in almost every tank, hundreds, a serious snail problem)anyway, i left the shop feeling happy that i got a bargin and went to the car, in the car i peeked inside and noticed he had put baby golden apple snails in,duh. so i went back and politly told him his mistake and his reply was "thats what you asked for, the are malysian trumpet snails, i think i should know, i do own this shop." i couldnt belive it, i honestly thought he had make a silly mistake but he was trying to con me. (oh i paid for the snails, he wouldnt give them to me for free)he then asked me " how many years have you kept fish, i know what im on about, you just a beginner" ha the cheek. i would say im a expert, but certainly no beginner. i know what im on about. and anyway, whats experience got to do with anything, it doesnt take a 50+ year experienced fishkeper to tell the difference between malysian trumpet snails and apple snails. he finaly said " i'll take the snails back, but im not giving you anymore because you've caused so much trouble", he gave me my money back, which i had to ask for, then told me "your not welcome here, f*** off" well, no wonder i hated the man, can you blame me, by that time i was pretty annoyed.the shop had a few customers in, not next to the till, but looking around and i shouted back..."not my fault all your tanks have diseases in, the last 5 fish i bought from you died with in a week.and you over charged me." i saw a few more customers leave shortly after me. i dont mind fish seller to not know much, its up to the buyer to know what he/she wants, but what really gets on my wick is when they give the wrong info out, and expect me to belive it. my dad said he was being like he was because he was caught out but a young adult (me) that he didnt think knew much. boy, he was wromng, i always research what fish i buy. and helping out at the pet shop has taught me a lot too.
sorry for rambling on, i just wanted to share my experience and try to put off people from buying from ther again, as they dont deserve business.
i have found however, and to end in a postive, darvilles in bradford is a very good petshop, no live fish yet (setting up the tanks last time i was in), but plenty of fish products and small rodents. pet city is another good one, lots of small furies and fish.
i think its important to let other know of good and bad shops just to warn them if nothing else.thumbs2:

Oh boy! I hope you never go back there again...unless you're in disguise...

...speaking of snails...since you seem to know and I'm confused...what's the name of the teeny-tiny snails (circular shell) that tend to come in on plants and then take over the tank? I keep them under control by vacuuming the gravel...but they don't seem to match up to any pictures in my books...

hi, nice to see im not the only brit who's a member the this forum! sorry t hear about your experience in that shop. The best place i have found locally to me is a place called maidenhead aquatics, they have a section at wyvale garden center, there are 2 in northampton and i think that there are other branches throughout uk, if you can find one local to you try there, they have good variety of fish and are very helpful, never had any probs with them, have lots of fishy products too, good luck

I go to two different aquarium shops, Ripples which is a huge shop with a big choice of marine and tropical fish and products but I always prefer to go to Maidenhead aquatics in Telford, the store is tiny compared to Ripples but their fish are much healthier and bigger and they always test your water before you buy any new fish for free, also the staff are always willing to help you, at ripples, you have to look around the whole store and usually only see one guy serving someone else.

P.S Don't go there again

i agree thats why im telling the story, so others dont go there. its still a shame its open for business tho.lucky tho, i have a local fish shop, only a few miles away thats named "fish people" the workers there are very helpful and friendly.its not a big shop, and tends to stock common fish, but once in a while it does have something unusal. still, it doesnt hurt to look at other fish shops, even if to rule out crap ones.

EDIT: i looked up maidenhead aquatics, unfortunly they isnt one near me.

our superpets are pretty good.

Except one time some workers were having a war with pails in the tank room, and they almost cracked a tank.

But the managers are good.

And they ACTUALLY are selling a 16,000$ brazillian bird

If the guy told me to f*** off, i woulda rearanged his face!

That reminds me of a story. The last time we went to oklahoma, i was with my mom, and we needed gass. While we were trying to pull into a gas lans, a minivan was pulling out of a parkings space so we were politely waiting for it to move. Meanwhile, some hot headed arsehole pulled up behind me moms car and started honking and screaming for her to move her car. When i looked back at the bloke, he gave me the finger, and called my mom a b!tch. Nobody talks to me mum like that and gets away with it. So we pulled up into our gas lane, and he got in the one behind us. When he got out of his car, i almost died laughing. he was only about 5'3" tall. I went over to him and asked him "do we have a problem here" and he told me to f*** off, and pushed me. So i grabbed the little bugger by his neck and slammed him into the car and told him "touch me again, and ill make you uglier than you already are". He told me he'd be good. And the funny thing was, when i went in to pay for gas and grab me a snickers, he came in to get a pack of beer. It was funny because he was struggleing with both arms to lift it up on the counter.

Some people need to be taken down a peg. Dont go to that fish shop anymore.

intresting story,i will never go the that place again. im not really the voilent type, even tho i could have swung for him.but that would have made matter worst.like a said before, it wasnt the lack of intelligence, but the fact he thought he knew everything as he was always right when he was simple wrong but couldnt admit it.

all good ideas, but to be honest i would waste the money buying the bloodworms on him. although, eggs are cheap around here(well free is i get them from my hens) but its too far to travel. cursing him online makes me feel better tho. Arrrr, it still annoys me even now.
