View Full Version : Crayfish eating wood?

About a month ago i gave my friend a piece of drift wood to put in his 20 gallon tank and ever since his crayfish has been gnawing on/eating the drift wood. Is he doing this because it wood or because of algea growth on it?

From what I have read and just noticed of crayfish is that they will eat anything. The algae growth may be attracting them but I don't doubt they would eat the wood if something in it seemed appetizing. :)

driftwood grows a layer of "awfuchs" which is a type of algae coating that plecos and shrimps absolutely love. Your crayfish is most likely picking at this coating rather than eating the wood.
