I was given an emperor 400 filter for my 30 gallon tank. It sucks way too hard and my small fish cannot escape the current. How do I slow it down?

There is a lever in it, that you can push up/down, I think one of them slows it down a bit. You could try overstuffing the media boxes, and put a sponge on the intake as well, that may help a bit.

I looked inside and couldn't find the lever, do you know where it is exactly?

The filter also features an adjustable Spray Bar Knob that can be turned up or down to change angle of the spray bar or water flow when feeding.

I found this here, looking for a diagram for you.

On my emperor 400, its in the middle near the back. A sort of light grey colour. Can pull it up and down. Don't remember which makes it slower/quicker though.

The idea of moving the spray bars around is good too, I forgot about those.

Page 9 of pdf file, actual page 16 of manual , bottom left portion, step 8, of this manual, shows the flow control.
Hope it helps.

i had the smaller emperor a while ago (the 280 or whatever) and like korith said thers a grey knob on the top near the top that lets you adjust the flow

however when i google emperor 280 none of the pics show the knob. maybe its only on a certain production date they had them?

Think there is an old and new version of the emperor 400, not sure what the difference is. Not sure though, I think I may have read something about that.

adjusting the flow rate does nothing for the level of suction. All it does is move a dam up and down in the filter to restrict output. The filter draws the same(to change the suction, you would have to change the rotational speed of the impeller, or the diameter, or both) ABout the only thing i think you can do is to put a filter sponge over the intake strainer. Once the sponger started to get clogged with "guck" the suction would probably be reduced. Also, if you re arranged your tank so decor was around or near the intake, it would probably disrupt the flow enough to break up any current that formed. That's all i can think of

Yeah, I have looked at all that stuff. My filter does not have the flow control shown in any of the pictures.:help:

I don't have any flow control on mine either, you could cover the intake with foam, that will slow it down a little

Isn't it a 30gal? You could try a smaller filter also.

I don't know much about the little motors on these filters, but I wonder if they're ok to use with a rheostat~that would slow it down. We've used them at work on tools with much larger motors (hand tools). I know there are some things that you can't use them on though.
