How long before next step?

Hey folks,

Just got my new tank set up with gravel, decorations, heater, and water. I added in the water conditioner and have the heater set at 82. Now what?

Do I take a test reading? I purchased the API master test kit, with all those little bottles and beakers. And what do I test for? There are so many bottles and I honestly have no idea what I'm doing (aside from physically how to test, which is in the instruction manual of the test kit).

Also...how long do I wait to add the ammonia in?

You can start adding the ammonia slowly now. Do several tests and additions until your ammonia levels are 5 ppm, and then follow the fishless cycling guide f1oored posted.

Add the ammonia now (just a few drops like 2) and use the test kit for ammonia and tell us what it says.
