I have a thin white film of something on my tank. It is not green in any way but there are also a few tiny stringy things as well. Is it a diatom or is it an algae?

How long has your aquarium been set up, PP? Is it a planted tank? Do you run an air stone in the tank? How is it filtered and how often do you do maintenance on the tank? A white slime is a bacteria surge on firm surfaces because there is abundant food for them, thus you get a visible explosion of the creatures.

What fish are in the tank, and how much and how often are they fed?

I'd have to see the strings to tell you what they are.

My tank is 10 gallons, two weeks old and cycling. 4 platys + a few fry that are fed twice a day in the amount they can eat in 1 minute. Ammonia level is down to ~0 and am in the nitrite spike right now. Filter is a HOB rated for 20 gallons, no carbon. Airstone running 24/7. Planted with 2 brazilian swords, 2 java ferns and some anacharis, fertilized with liquid ferts. Water changes are daily @ 20% since I am treating for Ich at the moment. The slime seems to be going away on its own, I am just wondering what it is.
