Here is a rare pic of one of my older acara,Im pretty sure its a male.
Ill get a better pic of my new ones when there in the tank and settled in,I was just wandering if there were any obvious markings or finnage that I could use to tell them apart.

I don't think you will see much difference in such small guys. You may have to wait a bit, the difference is so small it is hard to tell. I know when I had Laetacara curviceps I couldn't notice the difference except a bit of size difference in the male from the female. I think the females spot in the dorsal is an indicator along with the normal pointed/ curved fins. Problem is they stay so small it is a tough one to sex......for me anyways. Good luck with them a really cool smaller cichlid.

That is a very nice fish Smaug.
Usually you can go buy the males being silightly more brightly coloured. Longer dorsal & anal finnage and adult males are often larger than females and when carrying eggs the females appear stockier.:ssmile:

A little looking and I came up with this....
Sexual Dimorphism
Very difficult to sex, especially when immature. Adult males tend to be slightly bigger than females, and develop more pointed dorsal, ventral and anal fins. The dark blotch in the dorsal fin is usually larger in females, and they appear stockier than males when full of eggs.
I do remember I had to bump up their tank temp to about 85-86degrees before I got a spawn, after trying for awhile at 80degrees with no results.
Hope that helps some.

Here are some better pics of them from this morning and just a little bit ago at feeding time. They are already looking colorful and perky.Check out the pinkish hue on the little one hiding under the wood.I was a bit worried when I got them so cheaply that they may not be real healthy but I guess I dont have to worry about thatthumbs2:
