And I came across a couple of ads. I don't really know that much about sw and would do TONS of research before considering taking on the task..but just wondering if this is a good deal?

Go for it.
With the amount of information and equipment available today S.W is easier than ever.
Plus plenty of online help if you need it.

Nothing ventured nothing gained

I don't know that skimmer, maybe someone else does. The filter is pretty much useless in SW. The light would also have to be replaced if you were going to keep any coral.

Hope that helps a little.

If it were me, I would look around some more, and try to find a true, "reef ready" tank, with a built in overflow. There are enough people getting out of the hobby right now, that you should be able to find one for cheap.

Thanks Coach, that's the kind of info I need, I've only kept freshwater so sw is completely new to me. If I do it, I want to do it right. I will keep my eyes open and hopefully you guys won't mind me asking for your opinions on my findings :)

IMO no. you shouldnt use the fluval, it will be a nitrate factory. the skimmer sells for $90 brand new on ebay, the light is just a regular 15w fluorescent, etc. really $400 is how much everything there would be new

I should apolagize , for my reply was to the question in general.

I agree somewhat with what Coch said about looking around for a Reefready tank although it will be tuff to find anything in that size.

Most LFS can drill tanks very easy for around $20.00 , just ask them.

Here in the states, we have craigslist.org.

Dont know if it is up north or not, but I see complete reef ready setups in that price range for tanks much larger than the one you showed us and this would include all filters, pumps, lights, and many times the coral or live rock as well as fish.

I think you can do better than that.

The problem I run into is finding just a bare 55-75 gal tank without all the acessories. All the ads I have seen have been for the same price as new or more expensive because the guy has a bunch of used chemicals and plastic decorations and the cheapo tank stand.

Best of luck to you!

Nope, I wouldn't touch that "deal." That is too much for what you are getting, and what you would be getting is not really a good setup for a SW tank.

I agree. If you really want it, you can make it work, but I don't think it's worth it. Which is probably why he changed himself.

Yes - the US has Craigslist. Canada has Kijiji. Same concept, just different names.

Actually, both of those are in both countries, however Kijiji is not widely used in the US and Craigslist is not widely used in Canada. :)

Really? Hah! You learn something everyday!

I haven't seen any Craiglist ads up here ever...wonder if it's out east, or on the west coast (higher population)?

Didn't realize Kijiji was in the States etiher...thought it was our Canuck version!(blush)

Thanks for setting me straight! thumbs2:

That deal is a rip off. Just go to Petsmart or Super Pet and buy a bare tank brand new. Buy your lights seperatly (you would need lights with that deal anyways), get a new skimmer off of E-Bay. You will pay the same amount but have all new stuff.

Thanks so much everyone :) I'll definitely keep my eyes open. I'm not sure when we'll be ready to take on the task of a sw tank, but when a good deal comes up I want to be ready. I would love to make my 100 gal a reef tank, but just can't afford to.
