I recently bought what I thought were and supposed to be boesami rainbows. Well as the grew and the colors came out I thought I had some praecox mised in. Now as they matured more I can see they are not praecox. I am thinking maybe herbertaxlerodi's? What do you think.:help:

my melanotaenia splendida austrailis(from petsmart) are starting to look just like that, with the yellow or red tail and black stripe. I have 6 and the 2 largest are getting stripes right now and the others are showing faint signs. Maybe someone else will be able to confirm

They look a lot like the bosemoni rainbows I used to have.

The one in the back of the pic is a boese and there are 3 others like him. But there are 4 like the ones in front which are totally different than than the boese and not sure what they are. I guess I should have clarified the pic.:14:

I did some research and the nearest match I could come
up with was Melanotaenia oktediensis.

I don't think they look like boesman rainbows. I got one and just returned it to the local fish store because he was beating up everything in my tank, including my neon rainbows. He ignored my rams though. Anyway, there is a "dark" line along the lateral line of the boesman, but not nearly that pronounced. To me, those 2 fish in the front are definately Cairns rainbowfish (Cairnsichthys rhombosomoides).

I agree with the Melanotaenia oktediensis but the center fish is a female boesemani.

Thanks all for the help, guess my dealer has his tanks mixed or he ran short and substituted something different. I will have to send him the pic and ask him.:hmm3grin2orange:

Thanks for the look.

Glad I found this thread, I ordered a tank full of "australlian rainbows" for my LFS and brought home 6 for my own tank. They are all around 1.5" very juvenile and grey and are starting to look just like yours. lol!

forget my previous reply-i must have been sleeping. these fish are one of these-yes they look very similiar

mela. herbertaxlrodi
mela. trifasciata
mela. oktediensis

IMHO-your photo looks closest to trifasciata and oktediensis, i favor trifasciata only because it is much more prevalent in the trade that i had noticed. all these fish look excellent.
