If it is properly braced and the inside is sealed correctly, then yes it would work, but after all is said and done the cost of the materials would probably exceed that of a glass tank.

Sometimes people just want to be different or need to do a custom install and this is thier easiest or cheapest solution.

I've not heard of a wood tank before....usually in this sort of construction, the inside is fiberglassed and sealed, and a glass front (and or sides) are inserted to finish the tank.

Once you get to a certain gallonage it is more affordable to make your own plywood tank, which is becoming more and more popular. As long as it is built to hold the weight it is fine. They usually use marine epoxy just like waterproofing a boat.

i could see someone doing this if they planned to do all custom concrete/fiberglass rock work to make a replica of a lake or something. Pretty risky if you don't get it sealed *just* right though

That is simply awesome ... some day when I have a bigger house and my kids are more grown up I'm gonna do that ...

Wood tanks are great. I don't think I would buy a used one myself though.
No weight to them at all, me and my wife could move a 180gal easily.
I also think the fish feel more secure especially with the bigger fish, as only the front is open.
