Do you think we should get a live chat like gelo_USA suggested?
I think its a great idea:19:

That depends. Can William afford the bandwidth you'll be using when it is implemented?
LOL jk <3
I vote yea!

I think it would be great but would it cause probs for William?

Obviously it is all up to him, but i think it would be very cool to talk to other members in "real time"
Gelo_USA
02-15-2007, 03:19 AM
yea mostly for the non forum things like when u wanna talk about other things too
I m sure it would be way less THREAD HIJACKING if we had the chat cause everybody would talk on chat what they do now on the hijacked threads LOL
cocoa_pleco
02-15-2007, 03:24 AM
yeah, it would stop hijacking and any emergency fish questions can be instantly answered

I checked no simple because chat rooms need moderators and I've seen way too many times that people offer to do so then don't stick with it.

I voted yes but I do agree with what hobbs said
chat rooms needs mods and there is no way we would be able to get moderators 24 hrs a day

What if we made 10 posts a min req for live chat? As for moderating, I haven't seen any ill behaviour from this community, and I'm sure peer reporting can take care of the occasional exception.
Gelo_USA
02-15-2007, 03:50 AM
tht would keep spammers out yea tht would be a good start but I think 10 posts is not enough cause anyone can get 10 posts FAST and get into chat rooms for the wrong reasons
cocoa_pleco
02-15-2007, 03:50 AM
yeah, no spam lately, and nothing dirty. How about a 50 post min instead of ten, and they have to be reasonable posts and the person has to seem like they want to stay on the forum for more than a year
Chrona
02-15-2007, 03:51 AM
Actually, I don't know about the post limitation thing. What if someone joined the forum to ask about a disease or something, and didn't have the time to make, say 50 posts.

yea but I wasnt thinking on the chat room for those porpuses I was thinking about the chat room only so we could interact talk about other things and about the hobby too but to keep the questions like tht on the forum so we keep it there for other people to read too
cocoa_pleco
02-15-2007, 03:57 AM
well, im sure they can answer some questions.
50 isnt that hard to obtain.
cocoa_pleco
02-15-2007, 03:59 AM
yeah, and like GELO said.
Any questions that guests may be able to refer to stay on the forum, but chats for goofing and other hobbies, plus any EXTREMELY emergency type fish disease questions like a fish with a gouging wound

Chat rooms can be fun but you have to have a LOT of participants to make it worthwhile for the site.
In a chatroom that I moderated, I donated every Friday and Saturday night for 6 months. (bummer) Soon the one that offered to do Monday was unavailable, then the person who was supposed to moderator on Thursday couldn't do it anymore and on and on it went until no one was around to open the room or one person got stuck with every night.
You almost have to have at least 50 people at a time who are interested or it isn't worth the trouble and I never see more than 10 people here on a given time.
By the end of a year, only 4-6 people were there at all and the same ones every night so others lost interest. The time zones for everyone got in the way, as well. When a person from one zone could chat, those in other zones were asleep. LOL
What I think "might" work if you like this sort of thing is get a group together who might be interested and all sign up for Instant Messenger. Works the same way but no mods need to be around and the site is not involved at all. You could open a thread in chatterbox and ask anyone who would be interested to post their interest and then contact each other via private message for their user name/email addy. Set a time to all get together and do your own thing.
Just a suggestion.

i voted no. i don't like chat rooms.

I'm with hobbs on this one. Having a chat room sounds like a great idea, but the maintanence of it is where the problem lies. I like the idea of exchanging screenames for instant messanger. We could maybe have a thread that we could post our screenname if we wanted to. You might get the occasional idiot that will spam you that way but you can always block them.
Gelo_USA

I agree with hobbs once again
I was thinking about it after I left AC to go to sleep LOL
we could just open an IRC channel independent from the site or just use instant messages like msn if u dnt want to give ur email to anyone but u do wanna chat with the people on the forum just create a new email only for this porpuse and share it tht would work well too I think

Just go to [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
and type your url in that bar, it will get you past all school filters. Not like i know from experiance or anything!:ezpi_wink1:

Alot of the younger folk who come on here might not be able to use it because their parens might think it's too dangerous

Why not just use either yahoo messenger or MSN ?
It would save William and the mods another worry to look after

Um that site kicks ass. This is going to be good for work. As long as that site isn't blocked.

A chat room would be good but all of the info shared would be lost after people logged off. Many people come here and just look through the post to find answers. In a chat there would be no record and even if there was a record it would be very hard to search. But I voted yes because I think the pros are more than the cons.

Floored does have a point. I mean, the info on here is awesome. At the same time, it would be nice to have a place to chat about whatever is on ur mind.

Doesn't aim have a chat room function? That may be easier, while allowing more people to chat than through instant messaging alone.

Well I voted no for the simple reason of the extra work for the admin in keeping control of content.
Yes it would be good, and I think there are enough people in different time zones to report bad behaviour in the room, but most of the mods being in the USA time zone, damage could be done before they get a chance to control it, it would be impossible to have someone monitoring it around the clock.
Dunno, I have mixed feelings on this idea

I voted yes on accident, I thought you where talking about something else. Anyways I dont think we should have a chat room becuase that may bring unwanted people to the forum. Also william all ready has it hard enough here I dont think he should have to worry about more stuff. I know windows messanger has a think that you can start a private chat room. And if people tihnk this is a good idea why dont we all stick with one instant messanger site, and then we can see each other there.
someone could start a post which shows us all of our names. And if you can someone could make it so only members can read that post.

Yeah, I've always wondered why we don't have a members only section.

or we can do as I sugested before
if u dnt want to spread ur email or whatever just create another one only to use for this purpose
we could choose anything AIM AOL MSN ICQ YAHOO whatever
I am gonna open a thread here on chatter box with a poll so we can decide on wich software to use and then we can post our usernames for whatever software gets chosen

I just don't like the interface. I'm used to how AIM is set up. The older version of AIM is sleek and efficient.
