View Full Version : Gravid Yoyo?

I have a yoyo loach that looks like it's going to actually blow up. It is sooooo huge in the belly! I noticed some weird behaviour between two as well - I was watching the tank and over the last two nights, the fat loach and the longest loach were doing some weird dance thing. They just kept going round and round and round. Then they would sit in a similar T position to that of breeding corys. Went on for hours and the africans in the tank were all hovering around them. Just hovering.
I know they don't breed in the aquarium - but I don't know what else it could be except that "it" is holding eggs.
I keep them at water parameters far from what others with gravid loaches that I have read about keep theirs at. I keep them at PH8.2, Temp is 26oC-29oC at the moment (its summer), KH of like 300ppm.
I don't think it's bloat as there is always a vege of some type in teh tank, they dont get fed much, and it's a primarily omnivore/herbivore diet. Not too high in protein.
So what happens if a fish that is holding eggs doesn't release them? Will she just consume them? I'll try and get pics but I haven't had much luck producing a pic that isn't a blurry blob....

Loaches have spawned in aquariums on a few rare occaisons. However, there have never been any successful hatches or fry raised as far as I know, aside from a couple folks with tankfuls of dwarf chain loaches claiming to have found a few odd juvies. If the fish does become eggbound there really isn't anything you can do, but it's not likely to happen.

Do fish die from being egg bound?

I've read that they can, never seen it myself though.
