My small yellow lab spit her fry last night and they are now in the new big fry tank in a small net. My lab is very small and I wasn't expecting many fry from her. As she matures she will be able to carry more. This time she gave me 5 little guys. They are gray brown right now but should color up in the next few weeks. Once they are a little bigger I will release them into the tank with the red zebras.

Here are some pictures of the new little guys. Sorry about the quality, the camera was having problems shooting throught the netting.

lol, I kid. Call it payback for the red head incident? lol

So anyways, back to the subject of this thread before it was hijacked....lol

When do malawian cichlids usually develop coloration? I was at my LFS, and most of the cichlids there (1-2 inches) did not have great coloration, so I wasn't sure if that was because they were not mature or if they just weren't that healthy?

There are more hijackings here then there are at Beirut Rafic Hariri IA. I don't mind though. Just don't hijack the noobs. They spook easy.

As far as their color goes. You should be able to tell what kind of mbunas you are dealing with in the first few weeks. Full coloration should be seen at about 2 inches. Pet store fish often aren't colored very well because of diet and water conditions (sometimes because of bad breeding). They usually brighten up with a little tlc.

No Kidding! Now back to your cichlids.

I thought you could tell on Labs at just a few weeks when the male develops black on the dorsal fin. Then I read that both can have black so this confused me.

How are all the other babies coming along?

The zebras are doing great. They are in a 29 gallon now and starting to look and act very much like cichlids. Most of them are about an inch long with some bigger and some smaller. It took them a while to get use to the bigger tank but they are fine now.

How big are most cichlid fry when they are spit?

I would say they are 1/4 to 3/8 an inch when they are first spit.

You said you had issues shooting pics through the netting... Those pics are amazing! I tried getting pics of my fry a few times and the quality was never 1/2 that good. Great shots!
