Hello everyone. My name is Jenni. I am a 23 year old female located near Denver, Co. I have a 29 gallon tank that I just began cycling about two weeks ago. I have 6 black phantom tetras and a red serpae tetra. Since I have read that serpaes tend to be fin nippers I have been keeping close watch on the others. In the future I plan on adding 3 or so upside down catfish and a few otocinclus, possibly even a loach or a dwarf frog. My only current concern is my tap waters PH is a bit high. It is hard to be completely accurate with the test, but I estimate it to be just under 7.8.

I have a betta in a bowl with some bamboo, but when my tank cycles and if the other fish are nice enough to him...he will move into my 29 gallon once it cycles.

My future goal is to set up a 75 gallon tank with a rainbow shark or 2 and some semi aggressive catfish such as pictus and petricola. I assume that my PH will be more of an issue in this tank.

If you wish to cantact me:
my sn for AIM is Sereena Alexis13
Also I have a personal email sent straight to my phone zenryoku@tmail.com

Welcome to the A.C.!

The Upside down catfish are easily my favorite of all of the catfish. They are a joy to watch

Welcome to the forum, I just added a couple of upside down catfish to my 29 gallon tank and I'm loving them. I also have a dwarf frog, most of the time I can't find him at all, so he's been a disapointment.

I used to have a Rainbow shark in my 29 gallon tank. Your tank is plenty big for a RS if you want one.

I have a rainbowshark. Be VERY careful about getting one. They are pretty agressive and extremely territorial. They will pick a rock or a cave, decide its theirs, and defend it with their lives. Be careful.

Welcome to the site, you will find great information here. If you want to lower your ph you can use ph buffers or I use peat in my filters, but I have canister filters. If you want to try it just put a little bit in at a time untill you get it to the ph that you want.

I have tried PH down and PH 7.0, as well as testing my filter on my tap to see if that made a difference. I experimented mostly on 2.5 gallons I had in a bucket so that I would not overwhelm my tank. None of these has even made a dent in my PH. What is Peat and how does it work?

Hi Jenni
Welcome to AC
I have a very peaceful rainbow shark in a 20 gallon high. He's only the size of the danios though, but his temperament might change when he gets bigger

peat is just dried up plant matter and moss. I Had to order it from my lfs but it was well worth it. you can get some from a gardening store but idk if thats aquarium save or not. It may have some added chemicals in it.

anyways It lowers your ph but its difficult to figure out how much you have to put in. I would suggest just adding a little bit at a time until you get your desired ph level. It also changes the color of your water for awhile so dont be alarmed. After a few water changes it went away for me.

I thoink most of the time the peat at hardware stores is safe, but it doesn't hurt to check the ingredients
