I broke the pump axel and bearing (long skinny ceramic-looking-thing) in the used eheim pump that I bought. I was dissambling the unit the blasted thing snapped! Does anyone know of a US-based supplier of parts? I typed in the part number and I get hits from EU! :(

Ok, I found a few places on the internet but the shipping kills! They're averaging $8 to ship a $5 part :(

Any suggestions?

some of the ebay "stores" have free shipping. you could also try looking in the classifieds for local pickup

I did some calling locally and found a guy with a spare. Now I can concentrate on staining the stand and hopefully have water in the tank cycling by the weekend.

trilbytropicals.com has good prices on replacement parts. No, I am not affiliated with them in any way other than being a happy customer!

Thanks gm72! I think I ran into this website one time but decided to look locally because of shipping charges. Since the original post I have almost rebuilt the pump that came with the used tank. It's super quiet now, good as new. It's probably as quiet as a new one.

On another note, I think I found the solution to my oily/filmy surface I posted a couple days ago. Surface suction extractor (https://www.shop.trilbytropicals.com/displayProductDocument.hg?productId=416&categoryId=14).

I bought the surface suction extractor and withing 3 weeks broke the piece that sucks the water from the surface. I had a snail that got caught up in there so I took that piece off, and while trying to get it back on, snapped it in two... be careful!

I did look up some information on it yesterday after I posted my reply to gm72 and found some complaints about small fishes getting sucked in and also the scoop not doing its job about following water level. I looked at the fluval one (cheaper) and I was wondering if the hose sizes will fit the eheim. Anyone tried it? What are you using now jweintraub? I seen some DIY surface skimmer but haven't convinced myself I want to build one.

Eheim hoses are 5/8" inside diameter FYI. No idea about the Fluval though, never used them.
