I looked at wal-marts fish yesterday, and the tanks looked horrible.
There was a small oscar carcass floaring in a tank with 20 dempsies, and there was one thing i couldnt believe.
All the small stuff on the bottom of the tank is crap?
I always thought it was sand!
The bottom tanks were TERRIBLE. All brown water with tons of crap, but the top tanks were okay-er.
There was a tank of poor platys, and i crushed down and bought 2.
One looked pregnant, and i give wal-mart credit for using breeding traps for fry, but 99.99999999% of the time all the fry die there, so I bought the pregnant one and a friend for her ( i dont like to buy from wal-mart, and i dont, but the poor fry shouldnt have to die)
When someone finally came to grab the fish, they said they have noone to take care of the tanks, and thats why it takes forever for someone to come.
Don't they get it???
DONT SELL FISH IF YOU HAVE NOONE TO TAKE CARE OF THE TANKS.
They have noone specifically for plants and pets, and theyre beside eachother, so cant they hire 1 measly person? hell, id work there to take care of the fish if i had more time

i think everyone on the forum agrees.
Why would they put a oscar in a dempsey tank?
and they have noone to take care of the tanks, so as long as they cant get someone to take care of the tanks, dont sell fish

It definitely varies with region, but in general, I mean, it's Walmart....they just want to cut costs and couldn't really care if they screwed their employees over, much less their fish.
Walmart is like the red-headed stepchild of these forums....lol....everyone wants to take a shot

I Have two dempsies and two oscars in the same tank...what's is wrong with that? Besides as babies they will do even better because they can grow up together...As for Wal-Mart (around here) I can not honestly think of one that has had "good tanks" they all should do what our stores have done, they have stopped selling pets in their stores period just pet supplies...well we do have the occasional sparrow flying around...lol

Ugh, I just got back from walmart, too. I can't help myself. Anywhere I know where there's live fish it's like I'm drawn to the tanks by some invisible force. I can't stop it! lol
Anyway, so I had to run in to look for a valentine's day card for my mom, and I walked that walk you do when you know you're about to see something dreadful. One of the first things that I noticed was a piece of paper on one of the tanks that said "do not sell", and I was like huh...I wonder why...surely it's not because they're actually conscious of selling diseased fish. What I saw in that tank broke my heart. It was about 4 baby tiger oscars all scrunced together in the top left corner of the tank with almost all of their fins taken by fin fungus, their eyes damn near busting out with popeye, and were barely moving their gills. I wanted to just put them out of their misery, but I'm sure I would have gotten in trouble for that. Those poor pretty little babies....
Another tank that was just as bad had some cute baby puffers in there. There was a dead carcass (had been there for quite some time, too) just rotting away in there.
I'm sure you can imagine the shape the rest of the tanks were in. All had dead and diseased fish inside. I turned around and there was a shelf of betta cups with about 4 of them dead inside their cups. I guess the look of horror was pretty obvious on my face because a guy standing next to me said "I certainly hope you aren't planning on trying to rescue any fish from here". I told him "I would never buy fish from here. I wish they would stop selling them completely instead of torturing them to death". We nodded in agreement and both left the fish section in disgust.
Now I'm all sad.
by the way, next time I go in there, I'm bringing my camera and taking pictures of all of their tanks. I'm going to send it to whomever I need to in order to hopefully get something done about it. It's seriously ridiculous.

Meh, I can see them putting all of that on a brochure, and then dropping them off at retirement homes around the country. I mean, the people in most homes couldn't possibly be more bored, so working at Walmart would be a kick for them.
Funny thing is, I'm not even sure if I'm joking. I can kinda see them doing this....lol

O M G....you guys are toooo funny!!! IF I get to retire, Walmart sounds pretty cool.....goodness knows I am running in and out of there enough each week to know the whole frickin store!
Seriously, though.....if each of us spread the word to just a few people each week NOT to buy from Walmart.....or any LFS with filthy tanks, maybe we can get them to clean up their act or stop carrying live animals. If I tell 2 people, and they tell 2 people, and so on and so on.....you get the picture, it will snowball. And ALL of us have to be strong and STOP rescuing the fish from Walmart that we know we have at least a snowball's chance in hedoubletoothpicks chance of saving....otherwise, as long as they sell the product, see a profit on the product, they will continue to sell said product. That goes for ANY product ANY store sells.....if they sell it, they see a profit, if they see a profit, they are going to continue to sell it....etc, etc, etc.

Complain to cooperate about your Walmarts as I did.
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
They finally cleaned their tanks up as well as Meijers, the second store I complained about. When you see so many dead fish sucked against the uplift strainer that the filter doesn't pump water, it gets to you.

02-13-2007, 02:00 PM
wouldnt that suck if some guy joined, and said he had 15 ten gallons, a 55, and 10 bettas and he later said he owns wal-marts tanks and works there, and after reading all 100000 of our walmart posts? OUCH

02-13-2007, 02:11 PM
OH my! THat pic is so funny!
The walmart tanks around here aren't too bad. I was a bit disappointed just after they opened and their tanks were all already fully stocked...there's no way the tanks could have cycled, but now the tanks are pretty clean. Same with the Petsmart around here. Maybe Canada's standards are higher than the U.S. for stuff like that??? I dunno.

Youre from ontario? i think its just edmonton here and ontario that have the line of PJ's pets and superpet.
Theyre run by the same company and often have excellent tanks and healthy plants. One by my place has every fish and plant you could think of

Yes sir, I am from Ontario. I find most places around here are pretty good. Sometimes we go to Big Als, but we've just realized that there's a place here in town that is pretty good, it's called The Tropical Fish Room, and they've got tons of fish.

oh and I've never heard of PJ's Pets, but there are Superpets around. Not in my town, but not too far away. Super Pet, Petsmart, and Petcetera...

I've only been to the fish part of one of the walmarts around here.. they weren't bad.. but they definetly were not good either. now I go there for the stuff I need because they are cheaper than the LFS.. the biggest difference between the tanks is that there are no real plants in the tanks at that walmart.. I dunno... I don't think I would ever buy a fish from there, but it is something to look at, at least when I'm deciding what to get my fish..

I went to the local wallmart here to buy some other things and decided to check out the pet dept and I was expecting to see something HORRIBLE as most of the people say but I was actually impressed every tank was CLEANN I saw no fish with visible diseases, no tank was tht overcrowded, water was crystal clear; the conditions at the wallmart was about the same as the local pet shop where I buy my stuff but wallmart was wayyyyy cheaper a black skirt tetra at wallmart is 1.98 and in my local pet shop its 5.99 WAYYYYY OVER PRICED or wallmart is just realllyyyy cheap
I got 2 buddies for my tetra at wallmart and will probably be going back for my tiger tetra and other fish when I get a bigger tank

I think Petcetera does have that deal, but I'm not sure. It's a long story, but I don't shop there (a personal boycott lol), and besides it's about 1 hr away. The nearest superpet is about 1 hr away from me, so I don't go there much. We do have a Crazy Pet here in town, and I haven't been there in a while, think I'll go there next time I need some fish stuff.

in my opinion, at petcetera only fish are a good deal. their oscars are half grown here for 20, even albinos are 20$!
Everything else is like products is double, but i have to admit their own tnaks are cheap. 80$ for a 20g set, and i paid 150 for my 20 hagen.
Im not sure i trust their own filters and heaters though
