Best additive--pure ammonia, cheap, from the hardware store. That along with a fishless cycle will work wonders. thumbs2:

Yup. No bottled bacteria starters are worth buying.

Substrate (gravel) from a healthy seasoned tank placed in a media bag and under your filter intake. :22:

I had excellent results with Seachem Stability. Just put it in as directed - added a few fish several days later. Had no ammonia spike and a small nitrIte spike, and that was it.

I did something *very* stupid and caused a spike on one of my tanks and cause a pretty significant mini cycle. I went to several stores looking to tetra safe start(the new bio spira) as i figured it would have the best chance of not being snake oil. Couldn't find it, and the places didn't have stability either(my next choice) so I went with api stress zyme. I did a large(50%) water change then dumped it and copious amounts of Prime into the tank. All good so far, and this was last week.

I agree with GM a fishless cycle is the best route. If you are researching before hand theres no reason to use a bacteria culture.

However, there are a few of them that do work now. Even "cycle" seems to work now (its a new version), so i have to disagree with GB on that one.

Stress zyme (api) is also supposed to work pretty well, but i would just buy it from big als since they sell the same formula.
