Best way to see if they are good rocks for your tank is to test them before you do anything else. Get some vinegar and pour just a few drops on each rock and if it fizzes don't put them into your tank. You will alos have to give them a very good clean and depending where you got them from may have to boil them too. :ssmile: Other than that. I think those are great rocks. thumbs2:

Thank's Celtic, i just got them out of a heap of rocks that were being crushed and used for road base, they were nearly at the top of a mountain, nowhere near water.

Sorry for double posting, but can anyone tell me what the rocks are, i've been looking around the net, and i'm sort of starting to lean towards them being shale, if thats the case i dont think i should use it even if it does'nt fizz with the vinegar, does this sound right to you?

I can't help you as far as knowing what type of rock they are but I think they're a great choice for your aqaurium.

They kinda look like volcanic rocks... You said you found them at the top of a mountain? If they are volcanic, I am sure they will be fine. No worries. If they are shale, they could contain some organic matter and that would disturb the equilibrium in your aquarium (as the stuff rots)... but I certainly doubt so...

The red colour that you see is most probably iron oxides...

Just give them a good wash with running water and put them in. They are very pretty!

Are iron oxides ok?
I have a lot of rocks around me that are like these and I've been worried they were metal because of the red colour.
Sorry for the hijack slimey!!

I would think so... I don't see why iron oxides would be dangerous... in fact, laterite has a lot of it and it is widely used as a substrate for planted tanks... I can see metals like mercury or lead being toxic and harmful, but I don't think iron would be.

Nice rocks but I thought if they showed signs of iron or rust that you should never use them.
