Went and returned all my heaters today,
Couldn't resist walking over to the Betta's, Had a new shipment come in, so there was lots there,
My Daughter talked me into buying yet another one, (orange this time)
Well the lady came over, we got to talking, She ended up trying to sell me a bunch of betta bowls, I told her I wouldn't keep a betta in one of those small bowl,, She kinda got to arguing to me over it, saying how they were perfect for betta's & she had betta's at home in them, They just come from puddles you know, Well I stopped for a min and just stared at the Betta's,. Then I pointed at the betta's and said, answer me one question, She kinda hesitated a sec then said ok, Please tell me "Do all these Betta's look happy to you, uhhh she hesitated and slowly said no.
I Rest my case, She never said another word about betta bowls after that.

Once this lady was trying to sell me a female betta to go in my old betta tank where I had my male betta, Babbles (Now deceased)
This was our convo:
"Oh, you must give your betta a girlfriend!" She said!
"Ugghh... You do know, that males and females shouldn't be put in the same tank together, right?"
"Yes you can! See this here <points to a tiny 1/2gallon bowl> You could fit 1 male and 2 females in here quite happily"
"<Me starting to get peed off> You COULD ;SQUEEZE; 1 male, 2 females in their - but NO, not happily at all! Infact if anyone DID try something as cruel as this - the male would kill the female/s or vice versa!!!"
"<The lady building a temper> That is not true! Why I have a male and female in one of those betta bowls at home and they are quite happy!!!"
"<Me just totally fuming> You make me sick..."
And then I walked out of the store and never came back LOL

I gave up talking to people in the betta section, some girl asked a Petco employee about putting a live plant in with her betta and the employee told her it would rot. I suggested java ferns and told her I keep them in all my tanks and they ware great. She looked at me like I had 10 heads and walked away  Just wondering, what store were you in? I check the bettas in Digby's Wal Mart but I NEVER see anybody working in the fish section, lol

The whole "puddles" thing gets me sometimes, it's only puddles for a little while til it floods again and then it's lots of water, and the fact that it might only be shallow is insignificant, it might be a couple of acres area, not a cup of water!!!!! And they can jump from one puddle to another puddle that's bigger too. Poor little mites, must be one of the most abused animals I reckon.
Yup...irritates me too...
And when you read articles about collecting bettas from the wild, you see that they live in huge (albeit shallow) bodies of waters...
I don't know how they managed to turn a survival tactic into a preferred living accomodation for bettas...

The Betta's original home come from Thailand's rice patties, and during a portion of the year, the bettas reside in not 'puddles', but small bodies of water. And in the rainy seasons, usually around June, the small bodies of water get bigger, and the bettas mate.
I thought that was intresting. I found it on the web.

Digby won't be selling until Tuesday, something about the shipment being held up at the airport, so policy says fish will be overly stressed and has to be rested a few days.
I was in New minus, "Pets unlimited"
When my kids finish growing up and "Move out!" I'm turning one whole room into nothing but fish, fish, fish :19: ya

The woman at the LFS today told a woman who had been through 6 fish already that it would be a good idea when the customer wondered if she should "get a bigger fish to put the little ones in their place." And this was 6 fish in a 2.5 gallon tank.

Ouch. I know also most Walmart stores that keep Bettas do not feed them in the bowls. Why bother when they get a replacement shipment each week? Very cruel. We have so many laws for animal cruelty but nothing for the inhumaneness of these types of pet stores.
Bettas should be feed a pellet or two daily. But I can see a store not wanting to feed them.
Most staff overfeed, which fouls the water rapidly, and makes it worse for the fish. If they can be sold within a few days, not feeding might actually result in healthier short-term conditions.
Ideally, the water should be changed every 2 days as well, but if they're not changing the water ...

Last Friday an employee at Peco was helping a lady pick out Fish. She told the lady the BIG 2 1/2" things in the tank were Shrimp and they were good for cleaning Alge. I told the Employee you sure they are Shrimp .I have had Few CrayFish that looked exactly a like and they eat all fish in the tank. She Called her Manager and she said they were Crayfish.
The Coustomer hads a 20g and the employee was just fishing out fish without paying no mine. Gave her a Dwarf Frog, 3 Snails, 6 Moons and 2 White Skirted Tetras before I could not take it anymore and left.
I do have to say most of the Employees at my Local Peco are knowledgeable.
